Motorola May Sell Mobile Phone Division

Struggling cell-phone maker Motorola Inc. said Thursday it is considering separating the handset unit from its other businesses in an effort to snap a deep slump that has followed its meteoric success with the Razr.
Under pressure from unhappy investors for the past year, Motorola signaled a willingness to break itself up after more than a year of dismal results and declining market share.
The announcement after the stock market closed sent shares in the Schaumburg-based company up more than 10 percent.
Carl Icahn, the billionaire financier who lost a proxy battle with the company in 2007, said he was pleased to hear that Motorola is exploring a proposal he made last year but pledged another fight for board seats this spring.
"This announcement by Motorola will not deter us from that effort," he said in a statement. "We believe Motorola is finally moving in the right direction but certainly still has a long way to go."
Motorola said in a statement that separating the mobile devices business, which is dominated by cell phones, would "permit each business to grow and better serve its customers." Its two smaller businesses are home and networks, which sells TV set-top boxes and modems, and enterprise mobility solutions, which sells computing and communications equipment to businesses.
But it is the badly underperforming cell-phone unit which prompted the move.
"We are exploring ways in which our mobile devices business can accelerate its recovery and retain and attract talent while enabling our shareholders to realize the value of this great franchise," Chief Executive Greg Brown said in the company's statement.
A Motorola spokeswoman did not return phone calls seeking more specifics.
Morningstar analyst Jordan Zounis said the ambiguously worded statement could mean a spinoff, joint venture or outright sale.
"If the mobile device unit is separate from the firm, my guess is that it would most likely be in the form of an outright sale," he said. "A standalone business would be tough to spin off in the current environment, given where Motorola's infrastructure is right now."
Trading in Motorola's stock temporarily came to a halt after hours before shooting up $1.23 to $12.73. Shares had risen 21 cents to $11.50 in the normal trading session _ down 28 percent in 2008 and 56 percent since hitting a six-year high of $26.30 in October 2006.
Brown, who took over Jan. 1 following Ed Zander's resignation, last week bluntly portrayed a lack of progress toward a recovery when discussing Motorola's weak fourth-quarter results. The company's profit fell 84 percent, handset sales were down 38 percent, and he said its share of the world handset market continues to fall after being reduced by nearly half since hitting 23 percent at the end of 2006.

Motorola Z8 RIZR Limited Ferrari Edition

In addition to Ferrari colors and logos, MOTO Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition comes bundled with two Ferrari videos, pre-registration to the official Ferrari site, custom Ferrari wallpapers and ringtones, direct links to to online Magazines like Top Gear, Auto Express, GQ, Esquire and Autosport, and a bundled “The Bourne Identity” movie.
I'm sure it will appeal to some diehard Ferrari and MOTO fans, but otherwise it’s just a plain old Motorola Z8 RIZR phone.
And it won’t even be available for Christmas. MOTO Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition will come on sale through Ferrari Store and major Motorola retailers in Q1, 2008.

Motorola Plans to Release 20 to 30 Phones in 2008

We’re glad to see Motorola starting to claw their way back to their days as a leader in the mobile industry. Moto just secured a significant portion of the top ten 3G handsets sold in the US this past Q3 2007, and they’re not going to just sit back and bask (which is the mistake they made with their initial successes in the Moto RAZR V3) in their achievements. Motorola has announced that they’ll be running a blitz on the mobile space by pushing some 20-30 handsets onto the market in 2008.
While Motorola sits pretty as the 3rd largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world, their stance in Taiwan only measures up to a ho-hum 4th place. Motorola is gunning for the top-spot in the Taiwanese market with this new handset blitz. Bill Chen, newly appointed general manager of mobile device business at Motorola Taiwan, said that “In the coming year, Motorola will also stress strengthening its relations with channel partners in Taiwan and to pursue a balance between sales volume and profitability while gearing up efforts to boost performance.”
If you’re looking forward to Motorola’s Android-based handsets, you might want to make yourself comfortable - as there’s no set timetable for the release of Moto’s new OHA-compliant handset. But, with about two handsets launching every month, Taiwan is going to get their fill of non-Android Motorola mobile phones.

Motorola ROKR E8 Hands-on Live Pictures

The Motorola ROKR E8 has often been referred to as the "morphing phone," and why shouldn’t it?
The keyboard actually changes based on what function of the phone you wish to use. When you’re making a call at the home screen, you’d obviously want the full keyboard there.
When you’re about to snap a flick, you get zoom in and out keys, a playback key for viewing recently taken photos, and a video camera key for switching to video mode.
In music mode, the keyboard displays next and previous keys, a play / pause key, a shuffle playback key, and a repeat key.
The actual device is pretty sharp, too. The entire front is like one smooth surface with a huge touch-sensitive "ROKR" (scroll) wheel in the middle.
What’s incredible, is that there is absolutely no tactile feedback on any of the keys when the phone is off. It’s just a flat surface with little dots to help guide your fingers. But when it’s on, haptics lends support when you’re pressing a button, but it actually makes the keys press.
Hard to explain, but there is definitely tactile feedback on a key press and not just the normal haptics vibrate.
As far as we can tell, the Motorola E8 features a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth (with various profiles including A2DP), and is a quad-band GSM/EDGE device. You’ll also notice a 3.5mm headset jack at the top of the phone, which is a little awkwardly placed if you ask us. The Motorola E8 runs a newer version of the MOTOMAGX platform, so Motorola RAZR 2 V8 users will have no problem getting used to the new handset.
We’re trying to track down a release date now, and we have no word on what carriers in the U.S. will be jumping aboard to carry it at this point. All in all, it’s not going to take over the world, but with its thin and sleek profile complete with a unique keyboard and excellent call quality, we could see ourselves using this every day.

Motorola 2008 Phones Leak - Fake or Real?

When it comes to the leaks about the upcoming phones, there’s nothing like a good brawl between respected mobile news sites about whose sources are the best.
Just such a “discussion” occurred last week between Dutch GSM Helpdesk and Boy Genius Report in the U.S. As we reported earlier, GSM Helpdesk has spotted a new Motorola phone lineup for 2008, one of them a really impressive multimedia monster with 8 megapixel camera codenamed “Scarven”.
Boy Genius Reporters, which usually have a really good inside line into Motorola, with earlier reports about RAZR2 and other MOTO goodies, went out to their sources and came back empty handed. Actually their sources called the photos, specs and everything else GSM Helpdesk reported fake.
And now it’s time for the third round. GSM Help Desk checked with their source, that provided the pictures and got the confirmation that the phones do indeed exist. They even managed to get Motorola Managing Director for Benelux Fergal Donovan on quote:
“The Motorola Skarven will become the new flagship of Motorola. Eight megapixel cameras and optical zoom will be the main points of Motorola in 2008. The Motorola Skarven will be a kick-slider, just as the Motorola RIZR Z8″
So there you have have it. The phones are real !!! No they are fake !!! No they are for real !!! Which one to believe?
With some lingering doubts, I’m currently in the corner of GSM HelpDesk. The pictures could certainly have been of better quality, but they look real enough, and getting a concrete person on quote is even more convincing.
But I guess, we’ll have to wait and see how this story finally plays out.

Alltel Announces Availability of the Motorola ROKR Z6m

Alltel landed itself a slick new cell phone today: the Motorola Rokr Z6m. A music-focused feature set gives the Z6m the Rokr name, but it is really just another Moto Rizr. It has the same (but still attractive) slider phone shape. Verizon Wireless released the nearly identical Moto Z6tv last month, but as its name suggests, that model is centered more on television.
Features on the Rokr Z6m include an MP3 player, a 2-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, an expandable memory slot, support for TeleNav's GPS application, and a standard 3.5mm headset jack. The phone is now on sale for $129 with service.
From what we can tell, it looks much more promising than the last Rokr handset to land at a U.S. carrier. We'll be able to say for sure once we get a review in our hands. And if all goes well, that should happen in the next couple of weeks.

Motorola 2008 Phones

We had a nice long talk with one of Motorola ninjas, and they let us in on some pretty big secrets. Most of our conversation is below, and we’ve got a good grasp on Moto’s whole ‘08 lineup!
- The Motorola Z10 should be out by Christmas this year.
- Motorola is reducing their Linux support and transitioning to UIQ (since they know own 50% of UIQ, it makes sense, huh?)
- There will be a 3G QWERTY entry-level smartphone that runs Windows Mobile 6, it might possibly be called the Q10, and it will have a touch screen. The first for a Motorola Windows Mobile device, not counting the ill-fated MPx.
- One of Motorola’s more high-end phones will feature an NVIDIA chip processor for smooth 3D gaming and video playback. This processor will be superior to the Nokia N95’s ARM 11 processor. This device is said to be their flagship ‘08 model
- The ELBA device, well, it’s 3G running UIQ, has a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, and that oh-so-cool-but-possibly-crap morphing keyboard. In addition, there is a new version of ELBA which is codenamed KEYWEST. That device uses the updated MOTOMAGX platform of 7.3, compared to the RAZR 2 that runs 6.2.
- There’s a touch-screen slider in the works with a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, GPS, 16 million color screen with a 320*240 size which is rumored to be 2.8 inches, running UIQ 4.0 — this is the Nokia N95 competitor, people! We’re told to expect an announcement on or before 3GSM and a June ‘08 release.
To recap: there will be 9 UIQ devices next year from Motorola, 2 of them with 5 megapixel cameras, and the remaining 7 with 3.2 megapixel cameras. The first 3G-packing MOTOMAGX phone might be the KEYWEST device mentioned above. It looks like Moto has their hands full…

T-Mobile Launches Motorola RAZR2 V8

So, it’s mid-October now, and just as we expected, T-Mobile has launched the new RAZR-hotness that is the Motorola RAZR2 V8. The JUIX- powered RAZR2 V8 will be offered as a higher-end handset for the younger, hipper crowd willing to pay a premium for style.
Now, you won’t be getting 3G data speeds (T-Mobile has yet to roll-out its 3G network), but with Stereo Bluetooth and 2GB onboard storage, you’ll be getting a seriously capable musicphone. And add in the 2 megapixel camera and MyFaves support, and you’ve got yourself a capable handset that’ll put some style in your pocket.
Grab your own T-Mobile Motorola RAZR 2 V8 with 2GB of built-in memory for a buck shy of $250 (with 2-year contract and $50 rebate), or go for broke and scoop one up sans contract for $399. Hey, you gotta pay to play.

AT &T's Inventory Sheet Shows the K850, z750, LG Prada, Moto Z9, Samsung Blackjack II and a "Deep Red" Iphone

It looks like Sony Ericsson may be taking a slightly more high-road approach to its first 3G handsets for North America than Nokia did with the N95, pairing up with AT&T all official-like for the Z750a and K850a. This inventory sheet, apparently off of an AT&T system, indicates as much -- and yes, we realize it's totally Photoshoppable, but the Z750 and K850 both seem like obvious additions for the carrier, don't they? Sony Ericsson could try to sell the phones directly through SonyStyle as it does with other models, but you figure that if they're going to put the effort into finally adding North American 3G, they're going to try to go big by launching it in AT&T stores. With a 5 megapixel camera on the K850, who's complaining?
With iPod shuffles and nanos available in a variety of shades, it only makes sense to bring the love to the iPhone too, right? AT&T's internal inventory sheet is apparently now showing iPhones in "deep red" (we probably would've gone with something a little more neutral like black for the first new color, but whatevs) though we don't have any information beyond that. No release date, no picture, nothing. The presence of a 4GB variant of the deep red iPhone here has a little skeptical, considering how its silver sib just got the ax, but who knows -- maybe Apple figures a dirt cheap model colored to match Festivus decorations will sell like gangbusters.
The LG Prada (alias "Vu2," alias CU920) has shown up for inventory tracking alongside the Motorola Z9 slider and the Samsung BlackJack II. The Vu2 could end up being one of AT&T's first MediaFLO-compliant handset for mobile TV on the network, and we don't really expect it until early '08 at this point; the BlackJack II looks ready to launch from the press shots we've seen, though, and we wouldn't be surprised if it hit before the year's out. The Z9 could be the hot slider we mentioned earlier today, suggesting a launch some time in the first quarter.

Fake Leaked Motorola 2008 Phones

See those photos of 4 "leaked" Motorola phones above? We got word from one of our oh-so-sneaky Motorola ninjas, and they told us that not only are the names fake, the specs, and photos are fakes as well. There is no 8 megapixel phone currently being worked on in Motorola Labs. The Texel sort of looks like ELBA, but these pics are fake. "100% percent, with out a question fake." The 5 megapixel Kodak lens camera phone we gave y’all the scoop on? Well, that is still in the testing phase, and there is no name, it’s not even in the final design phase. Additionally, we were told that the "leaked" images from Motorola Phone Tools of the Motorola E3 way back in ‘06 were most likely leaked by Moto on purpose. With that being said, we’ve been told this might have been another MotoMove to drum up some hype and interest in their upcoming ‘08 lineup which does in fact exist. So there ya’ have it. Busted.

Motorola Leaks 2008 Phones

Motorola had a presentation in Amsterdam, showing-off it’s new phone line-up for Christmas. However the new display of the new line-up for this year was not enough to excite the public, so Motorola decided to reveal their new mobile phone strategy and even provided a glimpse into it’s new handsets that should be released next year.
In the strategy field, Motorola will now be will now be marketing mobile phones in 4 distinct categories - ROKR line for the music focused phones, ZOOM line for the camera phones, RAZR’s will feature all the new multimedia handsets and Multi Q line will be reserved for a business oriented phones.
But the coolest part of today’s revelations was the glimpse into the new Motorola handsets coming out next year.
The most interesting among them is ZOOM series Motorola Skarven phone that will have 8 megapixel camera with optical zoom, big 2.8″ 16 million color display and “banana slider” form factor, similar to Motorola Z10.The rumors about really advanced an powerful new Motorola phone have been floating around the net for a while now, and if Motorola Scarven was the source for them , it should also have VGA (640×480 px) display, WI-Fi connectivity and GPS.
Motorola X Pixl is another ZOOM series camera phone, which is the first and long awaited result of Motorola/Kodak partnership formed in the beginning of 2006. X Pixl will be the first 5 mpx phone by Motorola to compete with the likes of Nokia N95, Samsung G600 and Samsung G800 as well as Sony Ericsson K850i Cybershot. It will probably launch as Motorola Z12 in the beginning of next year.
Motorola Texl candybar music phone will be launched under the ROKR line and will have the same touch surface/keyboard with shifting numbers/letters and keys that MOTO ROKR E8 has. From what we could see from the blurry picture, it actually looks very similar to ROKR E8 and to warrant a new release in Q1 next year it should sport at least some new specs. So I’ll venture a guess of what they might be:
Texl will be upgrade similar to RIZR Z8 -> Z10 and will be released as Motorola ROKR E10 3G music phone with 3.2 megapixel camera.
Motorola Genghis is a Multi Q line full QWERTY phone, that will be an upgrade to Motorola Q9 business messenger line and just like current Q9s will come in different colors.
