Sony Ericsson PSP Phone Rumors Rekindled by Sony COO
Watch out Apple and Google, Sony may just surprise the world with a ‘Playstation Phone’. The Japanese company is toying with the idea of developing a ‘Playstation phone’ that will combine the power of a gaming console with that of a mobile phone, a top company official told ET.
If it hits the market, the gadget could well be the next big thing for the struggling consumer electronics giant and give it a unique product to cater to two of the fastest growing segments in the market, namely gaming and mobile telephony. Sony Computer Entertainment co-chief operating officer Jim Ryan told ET that a Playstation Phone is a future possibility: “The playstation is a proven success and so is Sony Ericsson. Convergence with the two arms working together is definitely plausible.” SCE already works with Sony Electronics in jointly bundling Bravia with the Playstation franchise.
However, Mr Ryan said that it could be a while before a commercial launch of such a device happens given that there are a lot of issues that need to be addressed before a Playstation phone hit the markets. “What has been done is finding a match between a camera and a mobile phone, and that has been done wherein the mobile phone features are not reasonably inhibited and the camera is also a reasonably competitive product. It is hugely intellectually seductive to have a console-oriented phone.
He believes that the way this would happen though is the phone being superimposed on the console, unlike camera phones where the camera was put into the phone. What could make the exercise tricky though is the small screen size and limited key space, which could impact the gaming experience.
