Nokia E72 vs E71: Features/Specifications Differences

Here's the key differences between the two:

* The E72 runs S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, which gives performance (speed and battery usage), usability (middle softkey, improved multitasking, FOTA with UDP, re-arranged settings and menus) and software architecture (Open C, PIPS, WRT, wider multimedia support, security enhancements) improvements.

* The messaging software suite has been updated (similar to the Nokia E75). Nokia Messaging and Mail for Exchange are now fully integrated into the Messaging application and there's support for multiple email account identities. For the consumer this means a new email client (based on Nokia Messaging), push email for consumer accounts (Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, ISP) and updated Microsoft Exchange functionality. The device includes a lifetime subscription for Nokia Messaging.

Additionally, Ovi Chat, Nokia's instant messaging software, is pre-installed. It is accessible via the Contacts application, includes basic location features and supports Ovi accounts, Google Chat and Yahoo Messenger.

* Upgraded version of Quickoffice (version 5.3), includes full editing mode and support for Office 2007 documents.

* Support for Nokia N-Gage (via soical media press release, unconfirmed - see comments).

* Ovi Store will be pre-installed on the Nokia E72.

* The layout of the bottom row of the QWERTY keyboard has been changed. With a smaller space bar, there's room for two extra keys. The bottom row now consists of: function, shift, symbol, @, space bar, ?, !, ', Ctrl (previously: function, shift, @ space bar, ', ? and Chr). The control cluster has been redesigned, with the one touch keys made out of etched aluminium (similar to the E55). The D-pad now features a Optical Navi™ Key (optical 'track pad') for eaiser scrolling.

* There is a 3.5mm audio jack (previously 2.5 mm).

* A magnetometer (compass) has been added as a compliment to the GPS. Ovi Maps is included, along with a lifetime Explore license (pedestrian) and a trial (10 day) Drive license. The device ships with Ovi Maps version 3.0 (instead of Nokia Maps 2.0).

* Support for USB charging via microUSB port.

* The specification indicate that UPnP is supported, but it is unclear whether this would include the Home media software.

* Increased internal flash memory - up to 250 MB from 110 MB. Free RAM is expected to be around 80MB.

* Faster up and down connection speeds with support for 10.2 Mbps HSDPA and HSUPA (whether you can use these will depend on operator support).

* Call sound quality has been improved, with the addition of active noise cancellation.

Nokia 5530 Vs 5800 XpressMusic Phones: Features/Specifications

Low Cost 5530 Vs 5800 XpressMusic:

* Cost - the 5800's stated cost at launch was €279 compared to €200 for the Nokia 5530. That's nearly a 30% difference. If it launches in the UK the 5530 street price would be around £170 - £190, but would likely go down in time. This compared to the 5800 which started at £250 and has since dropped to £225.

* Smaller touchscreen (2.9 inches versus 3.2 inches).

* The 5530 is significantly smaller and lighter: 104 x 49 x 13 mm (68 cc) and 107g versus 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm (83 cc) and 109g.

* No 3G connectivity, instead the 5530 relies on EDGE and WiFi.

* No integrated GPS, which will limit the utility of location software.

* Different homescreen. The 5530 has a 20 person contact carousel (similiar to the 5630), rather than the fixed four person homescreen of the 5800.

* Different box contents. The 5530 has a different headset, no TV Out cable, no spare stylus or plectrum, a smaller memory card and no carrying case.

Nokia Launches the E72 With A New Optical Navigation Key, 5MP Camera, 3.5 MM Audio Jack, Noise Cancellation

Nokia has just announced a worthy successor to the E71...

Espoo, Finland - Swift, slim and resourceful are three words that accurately describe the new Nokia E72, which was unveiled at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore today.

Nokia's latest full QWERTY smartphone brings a rich mobile email and instant messaging experience right out of the box, making it the ideal device for people that want to be productive in both their personal and professional lives.

Building on the formula from the hugely successful Nokia E71, Nokia's best selling QWERTY device to date, this latest arrival in Nokia's Eseries family maintains essential elements of its predecessor, whilst still improving its capabilities in a number of areas.

"Despite the outstanding market performance of the Nokia E71, we still continually look for ways to enhance the device," said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President at Nokia. "So we included the desktop like email experience from the Nokia E75 and gave it a new optical navigation key for more intuitive scrolling through menus, emails and fast panning of images. We also upgraded the camera to 5 megapixels and added a standard 3.5 mm audio jack."

On top of these developments, for the first time, owners will be able to set up instant messaging (IM) accounts provided by Nokia Messaging direct from the homescreen. In just a few steps, device owners will be able to connect to their favorite IM accounts such as Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi, amongst many others.

These new IM features are complimented by Nokia's range of email solutions with a lifetime license for Nokia's mobile email and IM service, Nokia Messaging, as well as onboard clients for Mail for Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes Traveler.

Accessing popular accounts such as Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail, Ovi Mail and thousands of other email service providers is simple through improved on-device email setup, with the same easy to use UI integrating all of the owner's corporate email accounts as well.

Performance improvements are evident throughout the user experience including faster Internet up- and downlink speeds.

Other notable features which should make the Nokia E72 as popular as recent Nokia Eseries introductions include A-GPS and compass with integrated Maps, including lifetime walk and 10 days of turn-by-turn navigation if activated within the first three months.

Conversations are also clearer with active noise cancellation, and a torch can be activated with a single press of the spacebar key.

The office capabilities have been updated with a new version of Quickoffice, which delivers Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility as well as free version upgrades when new features become available.

The Nokia E72 is expected to begin shipping late in the third quarter of 2009 at an estimated retail price of EUR 350 before taxes and subsidies.

Here's the press release:

Nokia new Nseries flagship puts your personal internet experience into your pocket

SINGAPORE, 5 June 2009 – The highly-anticipated Nokia N97 finally arrived in Malaysia and Singapore to much fanfare at a unique Web-themed launch party held at the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur. Guests were treated to an immersive Internet experience that combined all the Nokia N97 has to offer – social networking, localised Web widgets and application, multimedia capabilities and a personal touch that exemplifies the S60 5th edition touch experience.

As the new N-series flagship device, the Nokia N97 brings the features and power of a mobile computer to a compact, pocketable package.

“The Nokia N97 is an important step towards our vision of delivering a highly personalized Internet experience,” said Chris Carr, Vice President of Sales, South East Asia Pacific, Nokia. “Fuelled by a multitude of media and applications through the Ovi Store, the Nokia N97 transforms the Internet into an experience that’s completely tailored to the tastes and interests of its user.”

Ovi Store on board
The Nokia N97 is the first device to ship with Ovi Store, a one-stop shop for a full catalog of applications, games, videos, podcasts, productivity tools, web and location-based services, and much more. Ovi Store has paid and free content from a range of global and local content providers and developers, including Facebook, Hi5, Paramount Pictures and Qik, as well as Twitter applications.

“Social networking is also key to what the Nokia N97 is bringing to the table which is why we created a customised Facebook experience for the Nokia N97. By connecting users to their friends on platforms like Facebook and Friendster, we’re doing what we do best – connecting people,” said Vlasta Berka, General Manager, Nokia Singapore / Malaysia & Brunei.

Enjoy your upgrades
The beauty of this Nokia device is that taking it out of the box is just the beginning. As with a desktop PC, people can constantly improve and refresh their Nokia N97 with new features, functions and fixes so they can do even more with the device. An exciting roadmap of new features and functions is planned to roll out in the second half of 2009.

Entertainment ensured
The Nokia N97 also has direct access to the huge catalog of music in the Nokia Music Store (available in Singapore). With multiple high-speed connectivity options and 32GB of storage (up to 48GB using a microSD card) it is possible to directly download and store tens of thousands of songs on the handset.

Nokia N97 Available in Russia by June 17

Mobile operator Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) will be the first network in Russia to carry the new N97. Here's the official press release:

Moscow, Russian Federation – Mobile TeleSystems OJSC, the largest mobile phone operator in Russia and the CIS, and Nokia signed the memorandum of understanding on the direct delivery of Nokia devices to MTS’ retail network. The first joint project of the two companies will be the priority sales launch of Nokia N97, Nokia's flagship mobile computer, equipped with exclusive software from MTS.

The agreement signed by MTS and Nokia at the 2009 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum provides for the direct supply of Nokia products to MTS’ retail network, joint marketing campaigns to promote Nokia’s handsets and a special training program for MTS’ retail employees.

“This partnership agreement with Nokia is a milestone in our development of the MTS proprietary retail network. Teaming up with the world's leading maker of mobile devices will allow us to further differentiate MTS' retail network by matching cutting-edge products with tariff plans to enhance customer experience and spur the growth of data usage by our subscribers,” noted Mr. Mikhail Shamolin, President and CEO of MTS.

“Nokia N97 is the flagship product which has no analogues in the world. For the first time in Russia, Nokia is launching such an important device in partnership with the largest mobile phone operator, MTS. Together with MTS, we have developed applications and widgets tailored to the Russian users,” noted Mr. Niels Nielsen, Director-General of Nokia in Russia. “The primary difference of N97 from the currently available smartphones is not just the availability of touch display and QWERTY keyboard on one device, but the fact that it is a mobile computer with a range of applications that allow individual customization of the handset.”

MTS has developed a number of branded applications for Nokia N97 aimed at business users that will be distributed on a free 2 GB micro-SD memory card.

The sales of Nokia N97 will start on June 17 in all MTS stores in Moscow and in the flagship Nokia store. By the end of the month, the device will become available to subscribers of all mobile operators through the MTS retail network in Russia and the 30 Nokia stores in the largest Russian cities.

Here's Nokia's press release:

Nokia N97 mobile computer to begin selling worldwide in June
June 02, 2009

Espoo, Finland - The highly anticipated Nokia N97, Nokia's flagship mobile computer, will begin selling in June in more than 75 countries. Along with a tilting 3.5" touch display, QWERTY keyboard and a fully customizable home screen, the Nokia N97 will offer instant access to the full range of Ovi services.

"The Nokia N97 is an important step towards our vision of delivering a highly personalized Internet experience," said Jonas Geust, Vice President and head of Nokia Nseries. "Fuelled by a multitude of music, maps, games, media and applications via Ovi, the Nokia N97 transforms the Internet into an experience that's completely tailored to the tastes and interests of its owner."

The Nokia N97 is Nokia's first device to feature a personalizable home screen, which can be customized with a range of widgets which bring live information directly to the device. These widgets include key social networking destinations like Facebook and Hi5, news services like the Associated Press, Bloomberg and Reuters, as well as shopping and weather information. The Nokia N97 is the first device to ship with the Ovi Store, which offers easy access to applications, games, videos, podcasts, productivity tools, web and location-based services, and much more. Ovi Store has paid and free content from a range of global and local content providers and developers, including Paramount Pictures, Facebook and Qik, as well as a selection of Twitter applications.

Enjoy your upgrades
The beauty of this Nokia device is that taking it out of the box is just the beginning. As with any computer, people can constantly improve and refresh their Nokia N97 with new features, functions and fixes so they can do even more with the device. An exciting roadmap of new features and functions is planned to roll out in the second half of 2009.

Entertainment ensured
The Nokia N97 also has direct access to the huge catalogue of music in the Nokia Music Store. With multiple high-speed connectivity options and 32GB of storage (up to 48GB using a microSD card) it is possible to directly download and store tens of thousands of songs on the handset. And you can listen to your favourite music on the Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-905, which Nokia also launched today. This headset brings crystal clear sound, eliminates background noise, and is the ideal accessory for listening to music and making calls on the Nokia N97, as well as being compatible with a diverse range of other mobile and music devices.

High-quality images and video clips at 30 frames per second (fps) can be captured using the 5 megapixel camera with integrated Carl Zeiss optics. Images can also be geo-tagged to specific locations and shared instantly with friends or uploaded online via Ovi Share, Twitter or Flickr.

UPDATE: We’ve just got word the Nokia N97 will go on sale in the UK on June 19 for £499 sim-free at the Nokia Flagship store. It’s also available to pre order from the UK Nokia online store. It’ll go on sale on contract with networks from June 26.
