Sony Ericsson 'Paris' and 'BeiBei' Cancelled

According to The Unofficial SE Blog, 'Paris' and 'BeiBei' (G702), have both been cancelled in Europe. The reason for this may be the scathing review of Mobile-review.com and criticisms from other industry watchers.

Asia, on the other hand, might still be receiving both these units...

Nokia Talks About Product Leaks, Most Notably the E71

ESPOO, Finland - There is no doubt, now that the product has been launched officially, that the Nokia E71 takes the crown as the most leaked product I have ever known at Nokia. And, with such distinction in mind, now is a good time to discuss product leaks, their impact, and hopefully get a discussion going that benefits all of us.

I don't want to turn this article into a whining-fest, nor point blame at someone. The whole history of some product leaks in the past few months is a mixture of dumb moves, broken NDAs, maybe some thievery, and possibly someone with best wishes.

I've written about this on my internal company site, and it generated lots of comments. It was interesting to see that the comments I got pretty much reflected my own feelings about the subject. Indeed, I give Nokia the benefit of the doubt and stick to the company line: we do not discuss products that are not officially launched publicly.

How leaks happen

One easy way for leaks to happen is if we or a distributor make material available before the announcement. Indeed, not naming names, it has happened a few times these past few months. These are very frustrating, since it's our own darn fault.

Another way is for employees to inadvertently (or 'advertently'?) blurt out a product code name or show a product publicly. That then causes a flurry of folks to search for clues, pictures, and other materials to substantiate the incident.

These forms of leaks seem innocent enough, and seem to be resolved by a bit of care, but still are a serious matter. They are indeed breaches of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) that specifically state that pre-launch information is property of Nokia and cannot be revealed outside the company.

More legal troubles

A more serious form of leak is when an employee gives a pre-launch prototype (or photos or other media) to someone outside the company. While we can understand photos getting out, you can imagine our shock at a full hands-on review of the E71.

That was a prototype E71 property of Nokia, that was purposely sent by someone to the reviewer. I really am not a legal eagle, but it really seemed akin to handling stolen property and the employee or person who sent the phone is probably liable for illegal exchange of trade secrets.

Ok, as a gentler alternative to theft, we just hope that in reality it was a well-meaning employee who wanted to create some buzz around the E71, though they never consulted the teams that generate buzz through legal means. But, there are legal issues that can be brought against Nokia for potentially manipulating the market. And we all know the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

Impact of leaks (where I get to whine)

Aside all the legal issues around dealing in trade secrets, there is the aspect of why we keep products secret until we launch them. Until a product hits the market, it's still getting the final tweaks. Even when we launch it, there might be a lag time before we're ready to release the product in the wild, so it would be better to show the device under controlled circumstances so that there are no misperceptions or frustration over an almost-finished product.

Also, the whole consumer electronics industry is set up on a product launch cycle method for communicating, building market and sales, and supporting products. When a product goes out, it's not just put on a shelf, there are pricing deals to be made, sales and marketing campaigns (lots of times with partners) to be set up, support centers and sales teams and journalists to be briefed, and so on. Knock that out of whack and you get a really confused customer, angry partners, wasted money, and a bunch of writers with no story.

There are a lot of folks behind a product and leaks really screw up all the efforts.

A scary alternative

Part of the reason Nokia has so many leaks is that we are a decent, open, and general good-natured company. We have a very wide network of folks outside the company who work with us in marketing and communications and who help us in testing and distributing products. And we would like to stay this open, though it would be nice to plug some leaks.

The alternative is for us to lock down, send lawyers all over the place, and bug your phone (just kidding on the last one). That would be sad and have negative repercussions on our relationships with everyone. A good review of all we have been discussing was written a few years ago, discussing another manufacturer faced with similar leaks.

Where do we go from here?

We think it's great that folks are dying to see our devices. Can you imagine if there was a leak and no one cared? Ugh.

Obviously, we'd like to ask folks to do less peddling in our trade secrets. It puts folks at risk and screws things up for the Nokia and for other companies, too. I think really that there are only a small number of folks who really go too far in trying to procure leaked material. But if we cut down on our enthusiasm for leaked materials, then the thrill of being the one to post about it will be reduced.

What do you think? How do we balance openness and privacy as a product manufacturer? How do we keep your interest without giving away all the info before we're ready? What do you see your role in all this? Am I just a cry-baby or is this a real issue?

Nokia E71 and E66 Officially Announced!

Finally! The long-awaited and much leaked E71 and E66 have been announced today!

Nokia Official Press Release:

London, UK - Nokia introduced today the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 - the latest email-optimized devices from the Nokia Eseries product range. The sleek Nokia E71 with full QWERTY keyboard and the stylish, slide-to-open Nokia E66 easily mobilize a broad range of personal or professional messaging needs, including Microsoft Exchange, the world's most widely adopted corporate email solution. Both devices are expected to begin shipping in key markets in July. The Nokia E71 and the Nokia E66 are expected to retail at EUR 350, before applicable taxes and subsidies.

"The Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 were designed for people who lead a mobile lifestyle and want quick and easy access to their personal and work email. With both of these devices, we have responded to consumer feedback by making calendar and contacts available at the touch of a button," said Søren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Devices, Nokia. "Equally important, people want well-crafted devices that are as beautiful to use as they are to behold. Stainless steel was chosen as the core material for these devices, giving them additional strength and a touch of class. Furthermore, the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 offer all the latest multimedia features that people desire."

Easy, one-touch access to email
The Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 come fully equipped for easy-to-install and easy-to-use professional and personal email. People who use Microsoft Exchange at work can access their email using the Mail for Exchange mobile email client, which comes pre-loaded with the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66. With these Nokia Eseries devices, people can get reliable real-time access to their email, calendar, contacts and tasks, as well as download attachments like Word, Excel, Powerpoint or PDF files directly to their devices.

The Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 support email accounts from more than a thousand internet service providers (ISPs) around the world, as well as Gmail, Yahoo! mail and Hotmail. Additionally, the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 support the Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email solution as well as third party email solutions like System Seven and Visto Mobile. Both devices come with the new switch mode that allows people easily to switch between personal and work home screens.

"With mobile email penetration and access to wireless applications growing at a rapid rate, Nokia is well positioned with its extensive lineup of market leading handsets to address the needs of consumers, high-end users and mobile professionals alike," said Andrew Brown, Director, Wireless Enterprise Strategies Global Wireless Practice, Strategy Analytics.

Sophisticated tool, premium design inside and out
With a stainless steel case, etched graphics and available in two colors - grey steel or white steel - the Nokia E71 bears the hallmarks of Nokia quality and craftsmanship. The cool metallic finish is complemented by the bright colour display, which showcases the Nokia E71 device's brilliantly simple user interface. Designed for both one-handed and two-handed use, the Nokia E71 pays special attention to ergonomics, as evidenced by its narrow shape and specially designed keypad.

The Nokia E66 offers a premium look and feel with its stainless steel accents and smooth sliding design. Sharing the same key features as the Nokia E71, including an enhanced calendar, contacts and customizable home screen modes, the Nokia E66 offers unique additions, like an orientation sensor that automatically optimizes itself for full screen viewing or silences the ringer when the device is turned over. Available in grey steel or white steel version, the Nokia E66 leaves a lasting impression as a sophisticated business tool in a distinct design.

Always Entertaining
In addition to email and personal information management, the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 support the latest Ovi services including maps, music and media sharing that power users expect from their device. This includes fast and seamless browsing with HSDPA, wireless LAN and 3G connectivity, Assisted GPS (A-GPS) and Nokia Maps for navigation, a music player with support for up to 8 GB expandable memory and a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera.

Built for Businesses of all sizes
In addition to serving entrepreneurs and smaller businesses, the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 also come fully equipped with a robust suite of enterprise grade features, including a built-in encryption functionality for both the device memory and for the memory card. Both Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 also include integrated mobile VPN support that gives mobile professionals access to their company intranet, and device lock and wipe to protect corporate information. Incorporating underlying technologies that allow IT departments to effectively manage security settings, corporate applications, data and advanced voice features, the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 expand the range of Nokia Eseries devices that support enterprise-specific deployment.

Accessorize with Style
Also announced today were a number of Nokia accessories that support the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66. The Nokia Car Kit CK-100 and Nokia Display Car Kit CK-600 offer convenient handling, simplified installation and software updatability. The Nokia Car Kit CK-100 features Nokia Talk voice guidance and a remote control, while the Nokia Display Car Kit CK-600 features a removable color display and a remote control with illuminated keys for active call management. For increased mobility, Nokia also announced the sleek Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-212, as well as the Nokia Mobile Holder CR-106 and Nokia Mobile Holder CR-105 designed to complement the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 respectively.

Mr Wong Soon Nam, Vice President, Consumer Marketing, SingTel, said: "Our customers will enjoy a superior, cost-effective wireless email solution with SingTel's Broadband on Mobile and the new Nokia Eseries devices. These will give them a competitive edge and the ability to effortlessly retrieve important information on the move, making their office truly mobile."

"The Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 carry the promise of the Nokia brand, which revolves around quality, reliability and usability," said Mr Golinelli, Executive Vice President, Sales, Consumer Domestic Mobile Services, Telecom Italia. "Our wide range of customers is interested in funtionality but also in design and the Nokia E71 is the right and new concept for a new way of working."

"With the growth of corporate mobility adoption, the users' demands for new solutions and devices get stronger. The new Nokia Eseries devices, Nokia E71 and Nokia E66, attend to our consumers' different profiles and needs, due to their design and features, which fit both users' daily work and leisure moments in this connected society," said Paulo Cesar Teixeira, VP, Operations, Vivo.

Nokia N96, E-Series (E71 & E66) Launch Confirmed for the Third Quarter

From Reuters News:

HELSINKI - Nokia, the world's largest cellphone maker, is set to start selling a group of E-series enterprise handsets and the top-of-the-range N96 multimedia device, a senior executive said on Monday.

"We will in the third quarter bring to the market the N96 we have launched and a group of E-series multimedia computers that will be sure to have a strong stamp on where this market is going," Anssi Vanjoki, senior executive vice president of Nokia Markets, told Reuters on Monday.

Nokia declined to comment on the models, but industry sources said the company is set to come out next week with new E66 and E71 models. They are both expected to feature GPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera and 128 megabytes of memory.

Nokia unveiled the N96 in February and it is seen as the successor to its top profit generator, the N95. It will come with 16 gigabytes of internal memory and is expected to retail around 550 euros ($870), excluding subsidies and taxes.

"The N96 that we have introduced ... we believe this will be a significant product to the group who define the tone where the market is going," Vanjoki said. "Preorders for it are encouraging."

Nokia said in its fourth-quarter earnings report it had sold 6 million of the N95, often seen as the key rival to Apple's iPhone, by end-December. At the time this compared with Apple's 4 million iPhones sold. Apple has said it aims to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008.
