Nokia E61i New Firmware (v3.0633.69.00 ) Now Available at Nokia Software Updater


Steve Litchfield at AllAboutSymbian has just reported that the E61i has new firmware available.

Improvements include:

Initial impressions are that v3 is faster in general. Of course, this is partly because the firmware update zapped the contents of the internal disk and everything's optimal.

Messaging

* Reading of SMS time stamp information unified between regions
* SMS sending from SIM Toolkit - Profile 07 improved
* Unicode Handling with Turkish characters corrected
* Correction to fetching email from freemail server
* Intellisync: Slowness of searching a contact for the first time corrected

SIM

* After the startup, the phone recognizes the language to use from the SIM card
* SMSC is re-read from SIM after switch on

VOIP

* Improvement of co-operation of Gizmo VoIP client and Internet voice mailbox
* SIP Proxy Authentication corrected in outgoing call if two SIP profiles with same realm and user name


WAP

* Correction of Chinese word corruption with WAP browser
* Searching in Hebrew from portal corrected
* Wap GET/POST forms corrected when using Greek characters
* Reset during WAP browsing and MT calls corrected

Others

* Operator name list updated
* Start-up settings updated
* Settings Wizard updated
* Start-up date changed to 1.1.2008
* Correction of DRMClock behaviour with NITZObserver with negative time zone values
* Localization improvements

3G iPhone Confirmed to be Announced and Available at the WWDC on June 9th






The guys over at Gizmodo have reported, from a source close to the 3G iPhone launch, that Apple will announce the second generation iPhone at the WWDC (Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, a conference held annually in California) on June 9th.

The phone will be available right away after the announcement.

Here's an excerpt of Gizmodo's report:

In Spain, the 3G iPhone will be available for sale at the June 18th grand opening of Telefonica's megastore—an Apple Store-like shop located in the company's historical building in Madrid's Gran Vía— with nationwide availability the next day or after a few hours. The other European countries with iPhone availability will have similar launch schedules.

According to another source involved in the launch, the 3G iPhone will no longer be available at a fixed price point—at least in some countries, and its launch will also bring new sales policies, although these have not been completely specified yet. The move is a logical step, since the iPhone has clearly solidified its position as the cellphone to beat during the last 12 months, and companies in the cutthroat European cellphone market need to use it as an incentive to capture clients aggressively.

This most probably means the new 3G iPhone will be integrated in the usual marketing systems of carriers, with point-based trade-ups, discounts for carrier switchers and other service-based subvention packages.

Nokia E90 Latest Software Update Now Available


Steve Litchfield over at allaboutsymbian.com has reported that there is a new software update for the Nokia E90. The new version is v210.34.75.

Initial impressions (including changes since v7.40 firmware):

* Flash Lite 3 added, with Flash video support. Rafe reports that his E90 runs YouTube videos perfectly, but on my (admittedly proto) device Web's still unstable, for me, at least.

* Web runtime is also supported.

* Maps is still v1.2, i.e. the 'old' version

* New 'Set up Internet telephony' shortcut on standby screen

* Includes Quickoffice 4.1.27.5, many enhancements over the old 3.85, although without the extra functions of the v4.5 and v5.0 paid upgrades. There are also extra options in Quickmanager, specifically more rebrands of Epocware products. The new Quickoffice is apparently back-ported from the version which will be standard in S60 3rd Edition FP2.

* Application opening and booting seem faster. Steve doesn't think that v210 has demand paging - seems more like optimisations. The camera seems to start faster, too.

* A boat load of bug fixes and tweaks. The 'Today'/# bug in Calendar seems to have gone away.

Note: For Vista users, who have been hampered by Nokia's pulling out the Vista support from NSU, installation is possible according to Steve via Vista in XP SP2 compatibility mode.

According to Nokia's Support Page, E65 users will temporarily not be able to update their phones via the Nokia Software Update Service...

Nokia E65 support removed - 16 May 2008

Support for Nokia E65 has temporarily been removed from the Nokia Software Updater service. Other Nokia products are not affected. Support will be reintroduced as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

O2 UK CEO Hints at 3G iPhone Launch Date


The 3G version of the iPhone will be unveiled "in the coming weeks", the boss of Apple's exclusive mobile phone partner in the UK and Ireland hinted today.

Speculation is rife that Apple will reveal the 3G version of the phone at its Worldwide Developers' Conference in San Francisco, which starts on June 9.

Apple has not released any technical details for the next-generation iPhone, but it is widely expected to include 3G connectivity. This would let users download data such as high-quality video much faster, and could even support mobile TV.

Speaking after the announcement of O2's first-quarter results, the chairman and chief executive of Telefónica Europe Matthew Key said his company will be making an announcement with Apple in "the coming weeks".

Asked exactly when the 3G phone will be available he said: "That's more of a question for Apple ... but over the coming weeks we will do a joint announcement with Apple as Telefónica Group".

O2 has a "multi-year" exclusive deal to sell the iPhone in the UK and Ireland and will be the Californian group's partner for the new version of the phone. It has already sold out of the basic 8GB version of the current model.

iPhone To Be Available in Singapore (SingTel), India (Bharti Airtel) , Australia (Optus) and the Philippines (Globe Telecom)


Reuters has reported that the iPhone will be coming late this year to Singapore, India, Australia and the Philippines...

Here's the Reuters report:

Apple has signed deals to bring the iPhone to four Asian countries later this year, which should help the company surpass its sales goal of 10 million units by the end of 2008.

Agreements with Singapore's Singapore Telecommunications Ltd and three of its affiliates will bring the iPhone to Singapore, India, the Philippines and Australia, SingTel and Apple said.

Bharti Airtel Ltd, India's top mobile operator, will carry the iPhone in the world's fastest-growing wireless market, which already has more than 260 million mobile users. SingTel owns more than 30 percent of Bharti Airtel.

SingTel unit Optus will offer the iPhone in Australia, and Globe Telecom will be the Philippine partner. Globe Telecom is owned by SingTel and domestic conglomerate Ayala Corp.

An Apple spokeswoman said the iPhone would make its debut in those countries "later this year," and declined to comment on plans to bring the iPhone to Japan and China.

In its quarter ended March 31, the company sold 1.7 million of the devices, which combine a mobile phone, iPod media player and Web surfing; Apple's goal is to sell 10 million iPhones by year's end.

Nokia E61i Now Supported Again at Nokia Software Update Site


Good news for E61i owners...you can now update your phone again via Nokia's Software Update site (support for the E61i was temporarily removed last month).

Tried it myself, still firmware 2.0633.65.01, same version before Nokia pulled it...

Windows Vista Support Temporarily Removed from Nokia Software Updater


According to Nokia's Support site, Windows Vista users will not be able to use Nokia's online Software Updater due to stability issues...

"Support for Microsoft Vista has temporarily been removed from the Nokia Software Updater. This is due to recent changes in certain Microsoft Vista configurations that cause the Nokia Software Updater to become unstable. Other Microsoft Operating Systems are not affected. Support will be reintroduced as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

Very First Picture Taken by the Nokia E71?


Seen here first...I've just come across a picture in flickr of what might well be the very first picture taken by the E71 on the net. Varientetester took it this January and just posted it today...any ideas on the guy's identity (variente? Spanish or Italian?)?

More Leaked Live Hands-on Pictures of the Nokia E71, Available in the U.S. First?










Over at Howardforums, DechoWireless (a U.S. mobile phone retailer) managed to get their hands on what looks like a non-prototype Nokia E71. And with E-71-2 (RM-357) indicated on the phone, it seems that the first lucky country/region to have it will be North America.

From the pics it has FP1, a 3.2MP auto focus camera, flash and most likely a 2.5mm headphone jack...
(We can't confirm all of this info until the phone is officially announced)

Update: DechoWireless says the phone will be out by September...

Nokia N95 8GB Now Available in Canada with Rogers Wireless



Nokia and Rogers Wireless has announced the launch of the new Nokia N95 8GB,the first device from the Nokia Nseries available in Canada.

Nokia E71, E66 Confirmed via Nokia UAP/XML Profiles?




Over the last few months there has been a lot of speculation, rumors and a lot of blurry photos flying around regarding to upcoming Nokia's Eseries devices and now thanks to the new UAP's on the Nokia NDS site I can clearly say that both device are officially confirmed now.

Nokia have added bunch of user agent profiles to their website including ones for the rumored but yet unannounced Eseries devices, Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 models that are also known as Dora and Liam.

UAProf (User Agent Profile) is an XML document that contains information about the user agent type and device capabilities. It is a standard defined and maintained by the Open Mobile Alliance (formerly the WAP Forum) and it clearly confirms that Nokia will release those device very soon.

User agent profiles reveals that both devices are based on the S60 3rd Edition (3.1) and on Symbian OS 9.2. Both phone also features the disappointing QVGA screen (N71 in landscape orientation). Both phones also supports wide range of the connectivity options inclouding Wi-Fi, GPRS; EDGE; UMTS and HSDPA. Furthermore both devices are equipped with the 3.2 megapixels CMOS sensors with maximum image resolution of 2048 x 1536 px.

Video Recorder for the iPhone



It's a sad fact that Apple has neglected to enable video recording for the iPhone, but that doesn't mean iPhone users are going to be left out in the cold. Thanks to the prolific iPhone developer community, there are more features and applications for the iPhone than we can count - the newest application being "iPhone Video Recorder."

The new application allows iPhone users to record video in compressed mp4 format, at 15fps video capture rates. The iPhone Video Recorder nabs both video (at up to 320×412 resolution) and audio.

To get iPhone Video Recorder, you'll need to have a jailbroken iPhone. Simply add the "http://www.iphone-recorder.com/install2" repository to your "Sources" list and find the application under the "Multimedia" category. Install the application and go about your merry, video-recording way.

New SIM Card Unlocks Your Phone



24/7 Mobile Solutions introduced a new product today that fools your cell phone into thinking it is unlocked. Using its SIM card add-on, you can basically unlock it and use it on other networks without actually changing the software on the phone. Now if it only worked with the iPhone...

Sadly, it doesn't. But it does work with a lot of other high-end 3G phones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Motorola, and BlackBerry. It's a pretty interesting concept. SIMable requires you to use some of those crafting skills you forgot you had. Here's the deal.

SIMable is an "ultra thin chip" that you attach to the SIM card of your choice. It's not a simple matter of slapping it on, though. You have to align some things up, use a scary-sounding machine called the cutting press, poke some holes into the SIM and make sure the stars are all crossed. Once that bit of magic is complete, simply insert the paired chips into the cell phone of your choice, and voila, one unlocked phone.

24/7 Mobile Solutions notes that, "Whilst mobile phone unlocking is not illegal, it will, in most cases, invalidate the handset's warranty. SIMable requires no handset interference and thus the full manufacturer's guarantee remains intact. The company are keen to stress that unlike any other similar application on the market, SIMable enables 100% functionality on all phones, including full 3G operation."

Nice to know SIMable isn't going to screw with your phone's warranty. Since you're not actually altering the software of your phone, it isn't voided. And it's also nice that the phone will retain all of its features. Sometimes, when you unlock phones, they will lose carrier-specific functions. If you chose to remove the paired SIM cards, the phone will return to its original, locked state with no one the wiser.

(This won't work with Verizon Wireless or Sprint phones, as they don't use SIM cards. Also, AT&T, T-Mobile, and other carriers will likely unlock your phone -- if it is locked at all -- for $20 if you take it to a store and ask. If you go that route, however, your phone will be permanently altered.)

The guys over at SymbianFrance has just spotted a previously unknown pearl white color variant of the upcoming N78, priced at 419 Euros, for sale at Nokia Spain's online store (but still currently unavailable).

Rogers Confirms iPhone for Canada in 2008


Canadian telecoms provider Rogers has issued a brief note confirming that it has negotiated a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to the country, ending uncertainty that has persisted since the American announcement last year. The company is providing few details at this time but expects a launch before the end of 2008, according to a statement by company chief and founder Ted Rogers.

"We're thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year," he says. "We can't tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned."

The statement comes just days after the Toronto Star floated claims that Rogers intends to launch the iPhone by July as part of a push for touchscreen-capable cellphones during the late spring and early summer. Rogers was one of the earliest carriers to declare its intent to carry the iPhone, telling customers shortly after the iPhone's January 2007 unveiling that it would sell the handset, but has remained largely silent since then.

It's unknown at this time as to whether the agreement will resolve Apple's ongoing trademark battle with Comwave, which claims to have used the iPhone name shortly before Apple registered the trademark and has asked that the American company buy the name or else change the title for its product before it goes on sale.

First Blackberry Flip Phone Leaked Picture


Looks like the folks up in Waterloo have been busy finding new designs lately. This is what they have come up with. It is a BlackBerry flip. I never thought I would see the day. This new device, called the Kickstart, is the first BlackBerry flip phone, ever. For a first attempt, this is not looking to shabby either. The device could be released as early as the end of the year.

Well, lets see what we can learn from this image. First, it is very clearly a BlackBerry, as in not too much departure from BlackBerry designs we know today. We see the familiar and distinct RIM SureType keyboard. A good choice for a flip, where space is limited. Also, we see a trackball. A trackball makes even more sense on a flip, as it will be protected from pockets and such. From the screen, we can tell it is not running any special user interface. Definitely not the one we saw on the BlackBerry 9000 at least.

Interestingly, no model number was outed with it. It is not clear what series this BlackBerry belongs to. While the interface clues that it could be part of the 8000 series, there is no reason to believe that just because the interface is familiar it is not part of the 9000 series. While there is no evidence this is the BlackBerry 9100, there a few reasons it could be. The BlackBerry 7100 and 8100 series, were compact, SureType sporting BlackBerries. Clearly, this is a compact, SureType sporting BlackBerry. There have been no SureType BlackBerries that were not part of a *100 series. While RIM could introduce it as a new member to the 8100 series, it seems unlikely they would put this device in a candy bar family of phones.

With millions of tracks from major international artists, independent labels and Asian artists, the Nokia Music Store brings true freedom to music lovers, letting people buy and enjoy music directly from their Nokia device or personal computer 24/7.

"Consumers now have instant access to millions of songs from a very wide gamut of genres ranging from pop to dance to Asian like Mandarin, Malay and Indian music. Music from Asian Artists

The Store's intuitive user interface allows users to easily add any song to a wishlist to buy later or purchase it immediately for download to your device, without having to download the same song again on your computer. Pricing

Individual tracks cost 2.00 Singapore dollars per track and most albums cost 16.00 Singapore dollars each. Nokia has unveiled a trio of mobile devices that balance stunning and sophisticated looks with the latest in mobile functionality. All three devices, the Nokia 6600 fold, the Nokia 6600 slide and the Nokia 3600 slide present a smooth, minimalist design and an appealing array of easy-to-use features. The devices range in price from 175 EUR to 275 EUR before taxes and subsidies and are expected to start shipping during the third quarter of 2008.

Soft ceramic paint and metal combined with high gloss surfaces and gradated colors to make the Nokia 3600 slide beautiful to both touch and see. The Nokia 3600 slide is equally beautiful to hear as it is the first Nokia product to feature background noise cancellation.
