According to plemix.com, a reputable online seller, the Nokia N95 8GB Copper (brown) color is now available with them. It seems the change of color has only been done on the back cover of the phone (just like the recent release of the white N82).

Just in time for Valentine's Day, Verizon Wireless has released a pink version of the RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130, making for a nice little mate to the silver model. We first caught wind of this blush-colored smartphone at CES 2008 when RIM, perhaps without Verizon's knowledge, showed it off at their booth, but all is rosy now. You can grab the pink Pearl starting today for $149.99 with a two-year contract and after discounts and rebates. We suspect Sprint's red BlackBerry Pearl won't be too far behind.

New Nokia E90 Version 2 Fixes Internal Screen - Keypad Problem

After all the problems with the Nokia E90 it seems that Nokia solved the problems like the keypad that touches the internal screen. Till now the E90 was Nokia's worst-built device ever.

This news came from the German Telefon-Treff forums and a user called “NokiaN95-1”. He said he received his E90 today from T-Mobile with a “V.2″-sticker on it. Maybe this sticker means Version 2.

As you can see in the pictures now all keys of the keypad are on one level. In the old versions of the E90 the QWERTY keys were higher than the other keys. Thus they touched the screen. It seems that Nokia changed the whole keypad because of the factory defect.

New Firmware Update for Nokia N82

A new firmware update for the Nokia N82 is now available (from 10.0.046 to 11.0.117). The update appears to be relatively minor with a number of bug fixes and stability improvements. However it is notable for being the first Nseries firmware updates that supports User Data Preservation (UDP).

UDP means that the data stored on the internal memory of your phone should be preserved despite of the firmware update (previously the internal memory was wiped). However we would still recommend a back up either to a PC or to the memory card.

UDP works well with key information from Contacts, Calendar and Web retained. Third party application also remain untouched.

A bigger firmware update with added support for Flash Lite 3 and WRT seems likely for the N82 in the future.

As usual the firmware update is available for non-operator variants initially.

New Nokia 7900 Prism Crystal Edition Announced

Nokia unveiled its latest addition to the Prism Collection, the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism, aimed at design-conscious consumers. With its seamless diamond-cut design with a crystal centre key, the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism continues to highlight the geometric shapes and personalized style of the Prism Collection. Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism will be available in the first quarter of 2008 with an estimated retail price of EUR 375, before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia worked in collaboration with the creative designer Frédérique Daubal, which resulted in unique laser-etched graphic designs, distinctive wallpapers as well as exclusive accessories to the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism. The wallpapers inspired by Daubal communicate the reflection of light and capture the feel of angular prisms and triangles.

The graphic design of the aluminium back cover, together with intriguing light effects, make each handset unique and complement the glamorous appeal of the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism.

Combining special design and technology, the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism features an eye-catching large OLED display, with organic, modern digital art wallpapers inspired by Daubal. From a technical standpoint, the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism comes with a 2 megapixel camera, 3G technology for fast and easy downloads and browsing, 1 GB of internal memory and a music player with matching headset. Mobile Phone Radiation Severely Affects Sleep Patterns, Causes More Headaches: US Study

Mobile phones severely disrupt sleep patterns, according to scientific research into their impact on human rest, funded by the Mobile Manufacturers Association.

The research undertaken by the Electromagnetic Academy based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the United States, exposed 71 men and women, aged between 18 and 45, to mobile phone radiation as they prepared to sleep.

According to the study, monitoring under laboratory conditions showed the initial ‘light’ phases of sleep in the subjects were affected. In addition, “exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals, components of sleep, believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear, are adversely affected.” The research also found that those exposed to mobile phones during their sleep appear to have more headaches, than those not exposed.

The findings coincide with calls from UK company Exradia, manufacturers of the first device proven to neutralize potentially dangerous mobile phone radiation, for more government research into the health issues being raised.

David Schick, Exradia chief executive, said, “This study is yet another example of how using mobile phones can have a detrimental effect on humans. It is critical that the UK Government now undertakes a formal public inquiry into this issue.”

France recently became the latest country to advise against excessive use of mobile phones, particularly by children. Other countries who’ve issued similar advice include Sweden, the UK, Israel and India.

Mockups of Rumored iPhone QuickOrder System for Starbucks

Hot on the heels of the mysterious ordering patent that surfaced late last month, multimedia designer Phil Lu has put together some gorgeous mockup shots of what an ordering system for retail stores would look like using Apple's iPhone. According to Gizmodo, the shots were created before the patent was filed.

The design shows a variety of screens that let you design and customize a drink to order off Starbucks' menu. The system uses a mix of a credit account and a Semacode scanning system similar to the barcodes recently used at several airports to verify passenger boarding passes with people's cellular phone displays. In this case, the code is to verify your payment before pickup.

Ideally, if a system like this were in place, you'd be able to order your coffee without having to wait in line or get to the cash register as long as you had your iPhone with you. Thus far Apple's partnership with Starbucks has been fairly limited to music, but adding a little e-commerce with a kickback to Apple doesn't seem like an idea that's too far out, and one that could be replicated in other mass market retail establishments that are no strangers to the queue.

N82 First NSeries Device to Preserve User Data, Settings, Applications After Upgrading Firmware

One of the most common complaints about updating a device's firmware is that your settings and applications that you had installed are gone. In order to improve this situation with the Nokia N82 some changes were made as to how your data is stored so that when you update with Nokia Software Updater to the latest firmware your settings and applications will still be available! The N82 is the first Nseries device to implement User Data Preservation.

Note: Even with a device that has user data preservation, you should always back up any important data before performing a firmware update in case something goes wrong (and if something does go wrong you'll feel much better knowing you backed up your data beforehand.)

With that said, having your settings and installed applications still there after a firmware update makes for updating to the latest firmware much more convenient. This feature has not been discovered by you guys and gals because there hasn't been a firmware update available yet for N82 (don't worry the first N82 firmware update that improves the stability of key applications is in the pipeline and will be available soon).

Sprint's Pink Palm Centro Officially Launched

The Pink Palm Centro is now live on Palm.com's website. You can now place orders on the Pink model with the same $99 pricing (After Rebates and with New 2-Year Service Agreement). The Pink Centro is also said to be available in local Sprint retail stores.

The Pink Centro is also featured in the upcoming 27 Dresses movie and Palm is also positioning the fuchsia hued smartphone as a Valentine's Day gift. There is also a "worst bridesmaid dress" photo contest with with the award being a Palm Centro and a trip to Los Angeles.

Official Apple iPhone 1.1.3 Latest Firmware Update Hands-On Video Review of New Features

Announced this morning, Apple released iPhone 1.1.3 with several security updates (including addressing an important Passcode Lock flaw) along with new features such as Google Map Locator, the ability to send SMS to multiple recipients, customizable home page/icons, and webclips.

The download and install is available via iTunes and takes about 10-20 minutes to download and install (depending on your internet connection) and it updates both the software and firmware so it takes a bit longer than you may expect. Unfortunately, our iPhone worked after install, but it took another quick "iTunes activation" -- by placing back into the dock and waiting for the iTunes Store to sync it -- after the install to get it back onto the AT&T network.

Using the button in the lower right, the Maps locator service uses both WiFi (through mapped hotspots) and cell phone triangulation (through Google's partners) to pinpoint your location on the Google Map. The locator worked on two of our locations via WiFi and (much more slowly) via the EDGE network -- with WiFi turned off, providing a blue ring around your location and options to bookmark it for future use.

A second button in the lower right allows users to drop a "pin" to mark the location. Users can also flip back to the map and drag & drop the "pin" around the map to mark that or another nearby location. After dropping or moving a pin, clicking the lower right button peels back the map -- with some slick animation -- and allows you to replace the pin to the original spot, hide traffic, or switch between the map types (maps, satellite, hybrid, list). On the map itself, users can add the "pinned" location as a bookmark, get to/from directions, or remove the pin.

Multiple recipients for SMS was straight forward. Users can either type the name of multiple recipients or add them from their contact list. The message is saved in a new "multiperson" outgoing message conversation, but, disappointingly, not in each of the recipients' conversations; however, with the saved "multiperson" outgoing message, you can re-text the same group without re-entering the recipients. Apple, unfortunately, decided not to connect return messages to the group message, so the saved conversation is only good for tracking outgoing messages. Hopefully in the future, users can choose to track the message as part your individual conversation with each recipient.

Apple's much touteed homepage and icon customization works by simply touching an icon for an extended period of time to activate the feature. Users are offered feedback by seeing each icon "jiggle," signaling that they are ready to be moved. Apple offers a default screen the first time the phone turns on explaining this feature.

The entire screen begins to jiggle and users can then drag & drop to move that icon either around the screen or in/out of the dock. Interestingly, the items continue to jiggle for quite a while (even after the screen dims to save power).

In Safari, users can create webclips or one-touch access to frequently used websites. A "+" at the bottom of any webpage allows users to add a bookmark, add to home screen, or mail a link to the page. Simply touching the webclip icon takes a user to the page in Safari. Jobs noted that users can create up to 9 webclips.

Tennis Star Maria Sharapova Signs as Sony Ericsson Global Brand Ambassador

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications has announced today that it has signed an exclusive four year sponsorship agreement with female tennis player, Maria Sharapova, to become the company’s first global brand ambassador.

The stunning and talented Russian, who turns 21 in April this year, will undertake a series of innovative new consumer brand campaigns specifically designed to engage Sony Ericsson’s core target audiences and to utilise Maria away from the tennis court.

Maria will also be working with Sony Ericsson’s design team on a range of products and accessories.

The off-court agreement complements Sony Ericsson’s 6 year $88 million global title sponsorship of the WTA Tour which was signed in January 2005 and is the biggest deal in the history of women’s sport. Sony Ericsson’s commitment to women’s tennis has energised the game by bringing fans closer to the experience and taking the sport to new audiences through cutting edge initiatives like night tennis – a fusion of tennis, fashion, music and dance.

16GB iPhone for $499, iPhone for Japan via NTT DoCoMo, According to Steve Jobs' Leaked Speech at Macworld Expo 2008?

Steve Jobs' keynote speech, that he is due to make on stage at the Moscone Centre in San Francicso on Tuesday 15th January, has apparently been leaked via Wikipedia.

With highlights including a 16GB iPhone, details of the SDK for the device, a 13-inch 0.8-inch thick redesigned MacBook and direct YouTube for Apple TV, it would not be a dull keynote if it's all true.

In its entirety, if the sources are to be believed, here is what Monsieur Jobs is to cover during tomorrow's time on stage:

New Silver Edition Color for the LG Prada

LG Electronics has announced an upcoming European release of the LG-KE850 Prada in Silver.

The device won’t have any functional changes and will come with the big touchscreen display, no keyboard, a 2-megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens, 2G cell networks support and 12 mm slim shell. It also features an on-screen QWERTY-keyboard.

The device comes with a silver leather carrying case and the elegant package of the same color. The shipments of LG Prada silver will start later this month in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy and then in 13 European countries.

The LG-KE850 Prada debuted in Europe last March. Initially it came in Black. It got quite popular despite the €600 price tag. The model hit the 700,000 sales mark since the release date.

Live Leaked Picture of the Rumored Nokia E71

Nokia's rumored E71 smartphone may already have been confirmed, courtesy of a live shot circulated on the web. The image appears to confirm beliefs that the device would be considerably smaller than the E61i it is expected to replace, reducing the width without significantly affecting the QWERTY keyboard at its heart.

It also validates beliefs that the keypad will change slightly from the earlier device. New is a chromed, rounded edge that suggests Nokia will promote the device to more style-conscious home users in an attempt to compete with RIM's newer BlackBerry models.

No technical information accompanies the shot, though previous reports suggests it will have a 3.2-megapixel camera, 3G Internet on HSDPA networks, Wi-Fi for local networks, and authentic GPS mapping. An announcement is still expected in time for 3GSM's Mobile World Congress on February 11th.

White Palm Centro Live at CES 2008 at Las Vegas

While Palm is working hard to keep their next Centro under wraps, a little-known accessory vendor at CES 2008 Las Vegas managed to let slip a White Palm Centro. The handset is GSM and most likely headed for AT&T, but doesn’t look like the other Palm Centro that we believed was headed to Big Blue.

It stands to reason that Palm would bring a Centro to AT&T, and with the Black and Red color schemes already tapped by Sprint, the new White color scheme seems like a lock for the GSM version.

First Ever iPhone Trojan, Disguised as 1.1.3 Firmware Update

Your Apple iPhone could be infected with potentially malicious Trojan software because of a fake upgrade download, computer security officials with US-CERT warned Wednesday.

"This Trojan claims to be a tool used to prepare the device for an upgrade to firmware version 1.1.3," the US-CERT advisory said. "When a user installs the Trojan, other application components are altered. If the Trojan is uninstalled, the affected applications may also be removed."

The Trojan appears to be timed to exploit rumors that began in early December about new features in an upcoming iPhone firmware upgrade. Various online news sites and blogs cited a report published by CNET France that claimed an imminent iPhone update would feature a disk mode, for using the iPhone as a portable flash drive, and a voice recording mode.

On Monday, Symantec identified the malicious software as "iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep."

In a blog post, Symantec security researcher Orla Cox observes that installing the software doesn't appear to have much of an effect on the iPhone, but warned that uninstalling it could overwrite other iPhone applications.

"This is technically the first Trojan horse seen for the iPhone, however it does appear to be more of a prank than an actual threat," said Cox. "The impact of uninstalling the 'Trojan' would appear to be an unintended side effect. The risk to users is minimal as they would have to choose to install the bogus package and the site which was hosting it has now been taken offline. Nevertheless, iPhone users should exercise caution regarding the packages they choose to install on their phones."

Sony Ericsson Announces Three New US Phones for 2008, the W350, W760, & Z555 at CES

Not content to hold until the Mobile World Congress in February, Sony Ericsson took the wraps from three phones, all of which are destined to reach US shores.

The pictured W350 is unique in the lineup with an unusual flip that covers the keypad when not in use, covering it instead with an extra-simple navigator that gives basic music controls. Despite this, the device measures just 10mm (0.39in) deep, Sony Ericsson says.

It also claims a 1.3-megapixel camera, an FM radio, and the latest Walkman software with AAC and MP3 track support.

The device will ship in several black, blue, and white color schemes during the spring and will come packed with a 512MB Memory Stick Micro card. Versions for China, the US, and the world will be available.

Upping the level of performance is the W760; this second Walkman phone switches to a slider form factor and adds 3G Internet access over HSDPA, including for US owners. It also adds true GPS, a 3.2-megapixel camera, and a motion sensor that can be used for gaming as well as to change the interface and media playback to work in landscape mode.

Its music emphasis remains in place with integrated stereo speakers as well as a 1GB Memory Stick Micro card bundled along with the device. Sony-Ericsson plans to ship the W760 in the spring.

The Z555 is the Japan/Sweden partnership's sole fashion phone for CES and sports a diamond-like outer shell with a hidden outer OLED to reveal callers without flipping open the phone. It supports motion controls and comes with a 1.3-megapixel camera but is not bundled with any memory cards; it ships first among the lineup and will be ready before the end of March for both American and international buyers.

New Nokia N95 8GB Firmware Released, Full Support for Flash Lite 3, YouTube and Widgets Included in Update

Nokia has released a huge speed-boosting and enhancing firmware update for their N95 8GB flagship. v15.0.015 is pictured above (previous was v11) and is available now from Nokia Software Update (depending on your region and operator branding, of course).

Updates include Flash Lite 3 video support and the Web Run Time engine (Widgets).

Changes so far:

* The likes of Gallery and Search are now both faster and also kept resident in memory (even after pressing 'Exit'), in the same was as Contacts, so that they're much more responsive when needed.

* Speed of access to the integral 8GB flash memory disk has been improved. Doing an 'Image store' from PC Suite only took 30 seconds to scan my device, rather than several minutes on v11 firmware.

* Bugs have obviously been quoshed under the hood. In particular, the one that was stopping lots of third party themes working has gone - PiZero's New Gold, here I come.

Updates and additions:

* Flash Lite 3 and Flash video is now fully supported, I just watched native YouTube content - although emTube gives a better overall experience. Other web video sites using Flash technology, such as Daily Motion, are also fully supported. The newer version of Flash Lite also gives much better support for Flash web sites generally.

The Web Run Time (WRT) has been added. This is the run time for Nokia's new Widget platform. Widgets are applications that look like normal S60 applications but are powered by the same engine as the Web browser. They are written using HTML, CSS and Javascript (web technologies traditionally used in writing web sites).

Widgets appear as regular applications with icons in the launcher. Above are some of the early examples of Widgets that developers have made available: a Tic Tac Toe game, a Teletext reader (Finnish).

In summary, this is a very worthwhile update that has me more impressed than ever with the N95 8GB. The apps use the huge RAM to good purpose, Web has taken another huge leap forwards, and there are very few irritations left, other than the lack of mechanical protection for the camera glass.
