5320 XpressMusic

5220 XpressMusic

Nokia today introduced two new music-enabled devices as additions to its XpressMusic range. The new Nokia 5320 XpressMusic and Nokia 5220 XpressMusic offer a range of affordable music and entertainment experiences with the most fresh, stylish designs on the market. Both music devices are expected to begin shipping in the third quarter of 2008, with an expected retail price range of 160 to 220 EUR, before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia 5320 XpressMusic - Dynamic design, 3G social entertainment package

Featuring a dynamic design with 3G social entertainment capabilities, the Nokia 5320 XpressMusic delivers exceptional music and web 2.0 access. With the innovative new voice-controlled Say and Play feature, consumers can merely say the name of a favorite artist or song to automatically play it. Offering an array of additional features, the Nokia 5320 XpressMusic device includes dedicated XpressMusic keys, a 3.5mm audio jack, up to 24 hours of playback time, an audio chip for hi-fi sound quality, extendable memory up to 8GB, HS-USB for fast music transfer and HSDPA for fast access to data.

The full featured Internet browser, access to Ovi and Nokia Search 4.1 allow users to find and share media content and information with ease. In addition, dedicated N-Gage gaming keys and landscape view deliver a true gaming experience, while HSDPA provides fast access to N-Gage, which will be available for download. The Nokia 5320 XpressMusic is expected to begin shipping in the third quarter of 2008 with an estimated retail price of 220 EUR before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia 5220 XpressMusic - Edgy, unique design, music for the masses

The Nokia 5220 XpressMusic device offers instant access to music on-the-go with a unique, asymmetrical design. Featured for the first time on a Nokia XpressMusic device, a built-in lanyard makes the device easy to carry anywhere. Additional features of the Nokia 5220 XpressMusic include up to 24 hours playback time, dedicated XpressMusic keys and a 3.5mm audio jack. The Nokia 5220 XpressMusic is expected to begin shipping in the third quarter of 2008 with an estimated retail price of 160 EUR before taxes and subsidies.

Both handsets are compatible with the recently launched Nokia Music Store and offer easy music side-loading. With Nokia Music Store, consumers can choose from more than 2 million tracks from both major and independent labels; international and local artists and simply browse, download, stream and sync either to a PC or side-load directly to a mobile device.

Nokia Mini Speakers MD-8 - Powerful, portable sound

Complementing the new Nokia XpressMusic devices, Nokia also announced today the Nokia Mini Speakers MD-8. With a sleek, pocket-sized design and crisp stereo sound, these ultra-portable mini speakers feature battery power for playtime of up to 40 hours, an FM antenna to fine-tune frequency, and a tangle-free cable. Widely compatible, the Nokia Mini Speakers MD-8 will begin shipping in the second quarter of 2008.

Nokia 6212 Classic, Near Field Communication (NFC) Phone Announced

Espoo, Finland - Nokia has introduced the Nokia 6212 classic featuring integrated Near Field Communication (NFC). The 3G handset allows consumers to conveniently share content, access services and information as well as conduct payments and ticketing with one tap of the device. The Nokia 6212 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2008 in select markets in Europe and Asia with an estimated retail price of EUR 200 before taxes and subsidies.

"NFC-capable handsets such as the Nokia 6212 classic are set to change the way mobile phone users interact with devices and services in their surroundings," says Jeremy Belostock, the Head of Near Field Communications, Nokia. "With the Nokia 6212 classic, people can swap items like business cards or calendar notes by simply tapping their handsets together. With ever-increasing device functions and services available, ease-of-use is essential. One way to keep things simple is NFC."

Near Field Communication is designed for intuitive, simple and safe interaction between electronic devices. By tapping an NFC-enabled tag, consumers can receive new content such as weblinks, audio files or contact data directly to their phone. They can activate a profile in their handset or open applications such as FM radio or web browser. Photos and videos can be easily shared by tapping another NFC-capable phone and pairing with a Bluetooth NFC-enabled device, like the new NFC variant of the Nokia BH-210 headset, happens with just one touch. The lightweight Nokia BH-210 with NFC headset allows users to access all functions easily with a single multifunction key. The widely compatible headset can be used with a number of Nokia devices as well as other manufacturers' phones.

The Nokia 6212 classic can also be used as a travel ticket or for mobile payments. Travel tickets can be charged over the air, so there is no need to wait at the service counter. Users can store their credit card information on the device and access their account online directly from the handset. Using the Nokia 6212 classic for payment and ticketing purposes requires a service subscription and the installation of an appropriate secure application. Security for transactions is assured as the handset can be set to allow payment only when the user expressly authorizes the transaction via an additional passcode.

The Nokia 6212 classic allows consumers to personalize and edit their own NFC tags, be it for writing calendar entries or setting the alarm clock. The sales pack of the Nokia 6212 classic comes with three sticker tags, one of which opens the NFC introduction in the phone.

The slimline Nokia 6212 classic comes with an extensive set of features such as a 2 megapixel camera, bright 2-inch QVGA display, stereo FM radio and music player supporting multiple formats. An optional microSD memory card of up to 4GB provides ample space for personal content such as images and songs.

Nokia N82 Latest Software/Firmware Released

In perhaps the biggest and most long-awaited firmware upgrade in the S60 world for many months, the so-far flakey Nokia N82 finally had its uber-upgrade released, to v20.0.062. It's on NSU now for unlocked/unbranded devices. The main additions are Flash Lite 3 (and Flash video) and integrated GPS Location tagging; plus Web runtime (widgets).

[Note: User Data Preservation worked fine, all data, settings and apps were preserved!!]

Here are the changes noticed so far:

* Flash Lite 3 (including Flash video) - YouTube works, but the frame rate isn't stellar and videos seem to need 'opening on the page' rather than playing automatically
* Web runtime (Widgets)
* GPS location tagging is now integrated into the Camera software, as a setting (default is 'Off'), plus 'Show on Map' is there when viewing a photo later
* More stable software, numerous bug fixes
* Plus (according to Nokia's firmware web site) 'camera exposure improvements' and 'improvements to Bluetooth headset interoperability'

World's Largest Working Mobile Phone

A Chinese man is hoping to get in the record books after creating what he claims is the world's largest working mobile phone.

"Mr Tan, of Songyuan city, says his 3ft high phone, which weighs 48lbs, is an exact copy of his own phone - but 620 times bigger.

A local journalist tested the phone by making calls and sending text messages and pronounced it completely functional, reports City News.

Tan says it has all the functions of a normal phone, with a built-in camera and internet access but has to be plugged into the mains as he hasn't managed to build a big enough battery.

"The only other difference is that I didn't incorporate the vibrate function," he said.

Nokia E90 New Firmware/Software Update

According to Steve Litchfield over at Allaboutsymbian.com, there's a new firmware update (v200.34.72) for Nokia E90 owners.

Changes include:
  • Flash Lite 3 added, with Flash video support
  • Support for Web runtime is probably here as well, it tends to come along with FL3
  • Maps won't open, you get instructed to go to the web for the latest version. Clumsy. On the web, v1.0 is shown and v1.02 is served up, which at least installs and runs fine. I'm sure the latest v2.0 beta would, too.
  • New 'Set up Internet telephony' shortcut on standby screen
  • Includes Quickoffice 4.1.27.5, many enhancements over the old 3.85, although without the extra functions of the v4.5 and v5.0 paid upgrades. There are also extra options in Quickmanager, specifically more rebrands of Epocware products. The new Quickoffice is apparently back-ported from the version which will be standard in S60 3rd Edition FP2.
  • Application opening and booting seem faster. I don't think that v200 has demand paging though - seems more like optimisations.
  • A boat load of bug fixes and tweaks. The 'Today'/# bug in Calendar seems to have gone away. Anyone confirm this with a decent size Calendar dataset? Also, let's hope Web is more stable!
Update: This new version has been pulled from NSU...will keep you guys posted...
