Pink Palm Centro Coming to Sprint, Picture Leaked

Thanks to the SprintUsers.com forum member “TheRobin”, we have a high-quality promotional photo of the Pink Palm Centro — pictured above — and a not-that-exact release date - “sometime in January or February 2008.”

If our previous source was right, Sprint and Palm will be launching the Centro in pink on January 13.

iPhone 1.1.3 Firmware Update to Support Multiple SMS Recipients, Rearrangement of Icons

Previous firmware versions only did cosmetic changes to the iPhone interface as far as users are concerned. Back-end fixes can rarely be seen by the ordinary user. As some leaked info has it, the latest 1.1.3 firmware update that will become available somewhere in the near future will change a whole lot of things.

The expected new features are:

* The ability to send an SMS message to multiple people
* Google Maps cell tower triangulation feature "My Location"
* Google Maps can now display the Hybrid map view
* You can now rearrange and drag-and-drop icons on your home screen
* The home screen supports pagination
* You can now add web bookmarks to your home screen

Obviously the new changes such as the ability to rearrange springboard icons and the pagination are tell-tale signs that Apple are getting ready for unlocking the iPhone to third-party applications. So we wonder whether there are even more system changes under the hood of this thing.

As you know hacking every upcoming iPhone software update is a constant cat-n-mouse game between Apple and the hackers community. For the moment Apple leads 1:0 since older 1.1.1 unlocked iPhones can be updated to the current version 1.1.2, however newly bought iPhones, which come with the 1.1.2 version preinstalled cannot be touched without a valid contract with one of the official carriers. The only way to do that is using a hacked SIM card such as TurboSIM, etc.

As hackers insight have it, that will change once the 1.1.3 firmware version is out as some new valid hardware access key is needed in order to write some hacked code to the 1.1.2 out-of-the-box iPhones.

Release date for the 1.1.3 firmware is yet not known but it's positive that updating straightly to it will brick currently unlocked iPhones with the 1.1.2 software. Even if you have a legit contract account with AT&T, applying the 1.1.3 update to an unlocked iPhone will make it stop working even with the AT&T SIM card.

Samsung P720 (Dual Sim), F490, F700 Hands-on Video Review

New Dual Sim Samsung Armani Phone P720 and F490, Both Touchscreen Phones, Announced

A number of new Samsung handsets were presented during a Ukraine press meeting and most of them are pretty well known by now. You know, the likes of Samsung i780, i560, i550 GPS phones, or full touch screen Samsung F700.

But there were two interesting, and previously unknown, handsets present during the event as well. They are Samsung F490 and Samsung P720 full touchscreen phones.

Samsung F490

Samsung F490 is a full touchscreen mobile phone with 5 megapixel camera, tactile feedback, 3.2″ 240×432 px display, HSDPA connectivity and an estimated $600 pricetag.

It doesn’t seem to have a keyboard and looks like a direct competitor to Apple’s iPhone.

And it’s pretty close to the drawings of Samsung SGH-F490 handset found on the FCC site, so I’m sure it’s the real deal.

Samsung P720 Armani phone

Samsung P720 looks to be a version of Samsung Armani P520 phone, designed for Eastern European and Asian markets.

It comes with the same 2.6″ display, 3 megapixel camera, full touch screen interface with tactile feedback and other features of Armani phone.

The difference is in dual SIM capability, first introduced in Samsung D880 DuoS phone, which is a really popular feature throughout some Eastern Europe and Asian countries.

The Samsung P720 Armani phone will have it too.

Apple Patent to Allow Wireless Purchases in Stores via the iPhone

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs wants to patent a process that will save customers the hassle of waiting to order a cup of coffee at a local Starbucks or a fresh burger at the nearest fast food restaurant. Even better: The technology would let you jump the line of those ordering in person.

In an application with the U.S. Patent Office published on Dec. 20, the Cupertino, Calif.-based computer and gadget company described a wireless system that would allow customers to place an order at a store using a wireless device such as a media player, a wireless personal digital assistant or a cellphone.

The system could go far beyond the program that Apple announced with Starbucks in September, which allows iPhone users to press a button and wirelessly download the song playing in the background as they sip their soy lattes.

Apple's application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office describes a process for placing an order and then notifying customers when an order is ready to grab at a pick-up station. One goal, the patent application notes, is to avoid an "annoying wait in a long queue if the purchaser arrives before completion of the order."

U.S. Patent Application #20070291710 describes a device that also would keep tabs on where a user shops and what he or she likes to buy. Computers at participating stores would keep track of regular customers and their favorite orders.

Customers might tap a button to order their favorite drink, say a double-shot mocha, as they stroll up to the nearest coffee shop. When the drink is ready go to, the device--such as an iPhone--would chime or blink to let the thirsty one know it's time to scoop up the order at the counter.

The patent puts Apple's partnership with Starbucks in a new light. The technology promises to morph Apple from the business of simply selling gadgets and music and movies that can be played on those devices into an intermediary in all kinds of exchanges.

Helio Mysto (Samsung U600) Unboxing Pictures

You might have heard a little this and that about the Helio Mysto device. It’s a new handset making its way to Helio’s powered by SK Telecom network, and it will launch first in the Korean American Helio market tomorrow. If you’re not Korean, you’re going to have to wait for the general market release early next year which is looking like mid-to-late January.

If you want to get sneaky, though, you can head on down to Helio’s NYC or Santa Monica store on December 26th and pick one up! They’re $149 but won’t be out on display — you gotta’ tell the nice people BG sent you and have them snatch one out of the back!

If you don’t make it on the 26th, you’re back in the same boat as everyone else, and have to wait another month or two.

How do we like it? Well, it’s not a totally unseen device (it is a Samsung U600, after all), but Helio has completely done up the software and UI on this thing and it’s lightning fast! It also has GPS, a 2 megapixel camera, and it’s oh-so-sexy.

We even heard they delayed the Mysto just to make sure everything was solid, and we’re pretty sure if you’re a Helio fan, you’re going to love it.

“Maevro” from Howard Forums works for Mobile City Online, the same people who started taking preorders for the Nokia N95 8GB North American Edition, and in a recent forum post confirmed that there will be a Black Nokia N82 and a White N82. There will NOT be a USA N82, at least he doesn’t have that knowledge. Quote below:

Confirmed…

N95 8GB w/ US 3G (We are taking pre orders)
N82 Black
N82 White

They would not confirm N82 8GB and they would not confirm N82 w/ US 3G.

P1i Dual Sim Clone from China

Looks familiar? This is the P1i from Chinese company Gold Star and it looks exactly like a carbon copy of the Sony Ericsson P1i.

Don't be mistaken though - apart from a poorer build quality, it only supports the normal phone keyboard (not QWERTY) and a 2 Megapixel camera. It only runs on GSM 900/1800 bands and supports GPRS, making it a notch below the P1i in terms of connectivity. The screen can only display 65K colour as well.

It's not all negatives about this phone. There's the built in TV function, so you can watch TV on your puny 2.8" screen if your country uses an Antenna setting. The phone also utilises 2 SIM cards - a very useful tool for those travelers who constantly travel between different countries and worry about losing their SIM cards.

It's on eBay going for AU$240 (HK$1630, US$210, 145 Euros, 105 Pounds).

iPhone Playstation Emulator Now Public

A PlayStation 1 emulator for the iPhone and iPod touch, whose development was revealed just two weeks ago, is now available in its first public version.

The software is installed directly to jailbroken devices, and utilizes images of PS1 discs converted to ISO, IMG, BIN, Z or ZNX formats.

Users can also increase the performance of the emulator by installing a specific PlayStation BIOS file, and excuting hidden commands to increase the clock cycle and/or speed of their handhelds.

The emulator is significant for a several reasons, among them the fact that it proves the capacity to run 3D applications on the Touch and iPhone, such as Final Fantasy VII.

When Apple releases the iPhone SDK in February, developers may thus be able to develop more hardware-intensive software than they anticipated. The emulator may also raise the ire of Sony, which allows gamers to run select PS1 games on its modern handheld, the PSP.
