Thanks to the SprintUsers.com forum member “TheRobin”, we have a high-quality promotional photo of the Pink Palm Centro — pictured above — and a not-that-exact release date - “sometime in January or February 2008.”

If our previous source was right, Sprint and Palm will be launching the Centro in pink on January 13.

iPhone 1.1.3 Firmware Update to Support Multiple SMS Recipients, Rearrangement of Icons

Previous firmware versions only did cosmetic changes to the iPhone interface as far as users are concerned. Back-end fixes can rarely be seen by the ordinary user. As some leaked info has it, the latest 1.1.3 firmware update that will become available somewhere in the near future will change a whole lot of things.

The expected new features are:

* The ability to send an SMS message to multiple people
* Google Maps cell tower triangulation feature "My Location"
* Google Maps can now display the Hybrid map view
* You can now rearrange and drag-and-drop icons on your home screen
* The home screen supports pagination
* You can now add web bookmarks to your home screen

Obviously the new changes such as the ability to rearrange springboard icons and the pagination are tell-tale signs that Apple are getting ready for unlocking the iPhone to third-party applications. So we wonder whether there are even more system changes under the hood of this thing.

As you know hacking every upcoming iPhone software update is a constant cat-n-mouse game between Apple and the hackers community. For the moment Apple leads 1:0 since older 1.1.1 unlocked iPhones can be updated to the current version 1.1.2, however newly bought iPhones, which come with the 1.1.2 version preinstalled cannot be touched without a valid contract with one of the official carriers. The only way to do that is using a hacked SIM card such as TurboSIM, etc.

As hackers insight have it, that will change once the 1.1.3 firmware version is out as some new valid hardware access key is needed in order to write some hacked code to the 1.1.2 out-of-the-box iPhones.

Release date for the 1.1.3 firmware is yet not known but it's positive that updating straightly to it will brick currently unlocked iPhones with the 1.1.2 software. Even if you have a legit contract account with AT&T, applying the 1.1.3 update to an unlocked iPhone will make it stop working even with the AT&T SIM card.

Samsung P720 (Dual Sim), F490, F700 Hands-on Video Review

New Dual Sim Samsung Armani Phone P720 and F490, Both Touchscreen Phones, Announced

A number of new Samsung handsets were presented during a Ukraine press meeting and most of them are pretty well known by now. You know, the likes of Samsung i780, i560, i550 GPS phones, or full touch screen Samsung F700.

But there were two interesting, and previously unknown, handsets present during the event as well. They are Samsung F490 and Samsung P720 full touchscreen phones.

Samsung F490

Samsung F490 is a full touchscreen mobile phone with 5 megapixel camera, tactile feedback, 3.2″ 240×432 px display, HSDPA connectivity and an estimated $600 pricetag.

It doesn’t seem to have a keyboard and looks like a direct competitor to Apple’s iPhone.

And it’s pretty close to the drawings of Samsung SGH-F490 handset found on the FCC site, so I’m sure it’s the real deal.

Samsung P720 Armani phone

Samsung P720 looks to be a version of Samsung Armani P520 phone, designed for Eastern European and Asian markets.

It comes with the same 2.6″ display, 3 megapixel camera, full touch screen interface with tactile feedback and other features of Armani phone.

The difference is in dual SIM capability, first introduced in Samsung D880 DuoS phone, which is a really popular feature throughout some Eastern Europe and Asian countries.

The Samsung P720 Armani phone will have it too.

Apple Patent to Allow Wireless Purchases in Stores via the iPhone

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs wants to patent a process that will save customers the hassle of waiting to order a cup of coffee at a local Starbucks or a fresh burger at the nearest fast food restaurant. Even better: The technology would let you jump the line of those ordering in person.

In an application with the U.S. Patent Office published on Dec. 20, the Cupertino, Calif.-based computer and gadget company described a wireless system that would allow customers to place an order at a store using a wireless device such as a media player, a wireless personal digital assistant or a cellphone.

The system could go far beyond the program that Apple announced with Starbucks in September, which allows iPhone users to press a button and wirelessly download the song playing in the background as they sip their soy lattes.

Apple's application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office describes a process for placing an order and then notifying customers when an order is ready to grab at a pick-up station. One goal, the patent application notes, is to avoid an "annoying wait in a long queue if the purchaser arrives before completion of the order."

U.S. Patent Application #20070291710 describes a device that also would keep tabs on where a user shops and what he or she likes to buy. Computers at participating stores would keep track of regular customers and their favorite orders.

Customers might tap a button to order their favorite drink, say a double-shot mocha, as they stroll up to the nearest coffee shop. When the drink is ready go to, the device--such as an iPhone--would chime or blink to let the thirsty one know it's time to scoop up the order at the counter.

The patent puts Apple's partnership with Starbucks in a new light. The technology promises to morph Apple from the business of simply selling gadgets and music and movies that can be played on those devices into an intermediary in all kinds of exchanges.

Helio Mysto (Samsung U600) Unboxing Pictures

You might have heard a little this and that about the Helio Mysto device. It’s a new handset making its way to Helio’s powered by SK Telecom network, and it will launch first in the Korean American Helio market tomorrow. If you’re not Korean, you’re going to have to wait for the general market release early next year which is looking like mid-to-late January.

If you want to get sneaky, though, you can head on down to Helio’s NYC or Santa Monica store on December 26th and pick one up! They’re $149 but won’t be out on display — you gotta’ tell the nice people BG sent you and have them snatch one out of the back!

If you don’t make it on the 26th, you’re back in the same boat as everyone else, and have to wait another month or two.

How do we like it? Well, it’s not a totally unseen device (it is a Samsung U600, after all), but Helio has completely done up the software and UI on this thing and it’s lightning fast! It also has GPS, a 2 megapixel camera, and it’s oh-so-sexy.

We even heard they delayed the Mysto just to make sure everything was solid, and we’re pretty sure if you’re a Helio fan, you’re going to love it.

P1i Dual Sim Clone from China

Looks familiar? This is the P1i from Chinese company Gold Star and it looks exactly like a carbon copy of the Sony Ericsson P1i.

Don't be mistaken though - apart from a poorer build quality, it only supports the normal phone keyboard (not QWERTY) and a 2 Megapixel camera. It only runs on GSM 900/1800 bands and supports GPRS, making it a notch below the P1i in terms of connectivity. The screen can only display 65K colour as well.

It's not all negatives about this phone. There's the built in TV function, so you can watch TV on your puny 2.8" screen if your country uses an Antenna setting. The phone also utilises 2 SIM cards - a very useful tool for those travelers who constantly travel between different countries and worry about losing their SIM cards.

It's on eBay going for AU$240 (HK$1630, US$210, 145 Euros, 105 Pounds).

iPhone Playstation Emulator Now Public

A PlayStation 1 emulator for the iPhone and iPod touch, whose development was revealed just two weeks ago, is now available in its first public version.

The software is installed directly to jailbroken devices, and utilizes images of PS1 discs converted to ISO, IMG, BIN, Z or ZNX formats.

Users can also increase the performance of the emulator by installing a specific PlayStation BIOS file, and excuting hidden commands to increase the clock cycle and/or speed of their handhelds.

The emulator is significant for a several reasons, among them the fact that it proves the capacity to run 3D applications on the Touch and iPhone, such as Final Fantasy VII.

When Apple releases the iPhone SDK in February, developers may thus be able to develop more hardware-intensive software than they anticipated. The emulator may also raise the ire of Sony, which allows gamers to run select PS1 games on its modern handheld, the PSP.

3G iPhone for Japan?

Apple is in negotiations with two Japanese wireless carriers to sell its iPhone, but negotiations are dragging out over the critical issue of revenue-sharing, according to press reports.

Apple is talking with Japan's top carrier, DoCoMo, as well as No. 3 carrier Softbank. Apple CEO Steve Jobs recently had a sit-down with DoCoMo chief executive Masao Nakamura in San Francisco to discuss a deal, the Wall Street Journal reported.

"The negotiations are not going smoothly, as Apple's conditions are extremely hard to meet," a source familiar with the meeting told Reuters. "The ball is in Apple's court right now."

Apple appears to be ready and willing to play hardball in Japan. While it clearly has shown a preference to cut exclusive deals with the top carrier in a country -- that means DoCoMo -- press reports suggest that Softbank is extremely interested in becoming the iPhone carrier, leverage Apple would use to bring DoCoMo to its terms.

Apple has been talking to Softbank for some time, and the No. 3 carrier is making an aggressive push to take customers away from its larger competitors. The Wall Street Journal suggested Jobs is feeling quite smug about Japan. "A person familiar with the situation said Apple doesn't expect to have any difficulty concluding a deal with a Japanese operator," the Journal reported.

Japan is the world's second largest economy and one with a healthy appetite for the latest in cell phones. It boasts 100 million cell phone users, who buy new phones every two years on average.

Whichever carrier gets the Apple deal will certainly sell a lot of phones. The phone Apple winds up selling in Japan might prove to be the rumored 3G iPhone. DoCoMo doesn't run a GSM or Edge network, as all current iPhone carriers do, so Apple will have to deliver an iPhone compatible with the UMTS or HSDPA standards.

iPhone vs Blackberry, iPhone Wins

The iPhone has managed to outperform long-term competitors in the smartphone market, says a new study in the January 2008 issue of Consumer Reports.

The magazine gives the Apple device an overall score of 64 versus 61 for RIM's BlackBerry Curve, pointing primarily to Apple's longer 8.25 hours of call time in testing versus the Curve's 6.25 hours and its improvements in ease of use and synchronization with computers.

The BlackBerry's common advantage of its real-time "push" e-mail is beaten by Apple's inclusion of a stronger e-mail client, the publication claims.

Most other features are regarded as equals, though the consumer organization refers to the iPhone as the "best choice" between the two for media playback and criticizes both for limiting cellular Internet access to slow EDGE technology in place of HSDPA.

RIM has typically sold its handsets to business users and only began late last year to offer mainstream phones through the BlackBerry Pearl and the 2007 release of the Curve.

The Canadian cellphone maker was recommended chiefly among compact cellphones for the Pearl and was accompanied by a recommendation for the small, low-cost Palm Centro in the same category.

The report also sharply criticizes their frequent choices of carriers, noting that CDMA-based providers Verizon and Alltel generally provide higher overall satisfaction for call quality, coverage, and technical support than AT&T and its only major GSM-based rival, T-Mobile. The two tied for third place and are followed by the third chief CDMA carrier, Sprint, in fourth place. Verizon ranked the highest in part through fewer dropped calls and stronger signals.

Nokia 5710 S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 Screenshots

The next version of S60, before the touch version slated for late next year, will be S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2. It was previewed by Mobile Review earlier this year, but now we have the first screenshots from an actual device. Somehow someone got their hands on a 5710, which has specifications that vary according to who you ask, but what is certain is that the device looks like a black 5700. You can play with 3.2 by yourself if you download the SDK and emulator from Forum Nokia here.

Having previously used a FP2 equipped device at the S60 Summit in Madrid earlier this year and at various “Evening with S60″ parties I can say that the first thing you will notice is how snappy the operating system is. The transition effects are also very subtle, to the point that the only way you notice them is if you turn them off and the device just doesn’t feel right. Expect the first FP2 devices to be rolled out in Q12008 along with Flash Lite 3 support.

Record Videos on the iPhone - "Drunknbass" Application

The geniuses from Monster and Friends have created an iPhone application which can record video up to 45 frames per second.

They are still working in the final version, but to give you a taste they have published Drunknbass, a beta which records 5 seconds of video at 10 fps with a resolution of 2 megapixels.

I've tested and it works perfectly. It doesn't have any interface, so you just download it, put it in your iPhone's Applications folder, click on the button and it will start recording.

When Drunknbass is finished with the five seconds recording it will replay the clip once. The final application will be able to record unlimited-sized clips (only constrained by your available space) up to 30 frames per second and it will have an interface to save your clips (they are looking for developers to help with the graphical side of the software).

This is good for three things: first, because this confirms that video recording works great on the iPhone and we will probably see this officially from Apple, as rumored, in a future update. Second, because it confirms there are no limits that third-party developers can't overcome.

World's First Blackberry Store Opens in Michigan

It's not exactly a sleek Apple boutique on Manhattan's Lower West Side -- in fact, it looks like a rather cheerless box in a bleak Upper Midwest suburb -- but the first "authorized" BlackBerry store (does that mean there are "bootleg" BlackBerry stores?) had its grand opening this week in Farmington Hills, Mich.

Featuring "the most comprehensive offering of BlackBerry products and services," the new retail outlet is operated by Wireless Giant, a chain founded in 1996. The store is multicarrier, which means you can purchase BlackBerrys and data plans supported by any of the Big 4 U.S. wireless carriers: AT&T, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, or Verizon Wireless.

The new BlackBerry outlet follows a trend of device-makers opening their own stores: the Apple stores have become magnets for Mac-heads and lovers of iPhones and iPods, while Nokia has gradually been rolling out its own retail locations, with flagship stores in Chicago, New York, and Shanghai.

Asian Suppliers Reveal Second Generation 3G iPhone for 2008

After meeting with key component suppliers and manufacturers in Asia, researchers for investment bank Goldman Sachs said this week they believe Apple will introduce two revisions to the iPhone in 2008 -- one minor, one major -- in addition to an Apple TV overhaul during the second half of the year.

In a research note on Tuesday, analyst David Bailey advised clients that his Far Eastern contacts have led him to believe that "Apple has several important new products lined up for 2008," though none of them are expected to pack the same punch as the company's inaugural iPhone handset.

Among them is a second-generation iPhone currently in the "final design phase," the analyst said. The handset is expected to "have a similar form factor as the current version although it could have a different look and will probably include 3G capability."

Bailey estimates that the next-gen iPhone will launch sometime during the second half of the year, but also believes the company will tie over consumers with "a smaller upgrade with more flash memory earlier in the year."

Nokia 6120, World's First "Newspaper" Mobile Phone

Sweden's Dagens Nyheter said Wednesday it had launched the world's first "newspaper" telephone: a mobile phone offering the daily's subscribers direct and free access to its website.

"We want our readers to be able to follow the news even when they're in places where they cannot lay their hands on a paper or (access the Internet on) a computer," Thorbjoern Larsson, Dagens Nyheter (DN) editor-in-chief and publisher, told AFP.

"This is yet another way of distributing the news," he added.

DN subscribers can purchase the Nokia 6120 third generation phone on the paper's website, and by signing up for a 199-kronor (31-dollar, 21-euro) monthly call plan can freely surf the daily's website by simply hitting a special "DN" button.

Larsson said the offer was already proving popular.

"After we announced the launch this morning (Wednesday), we received so many calls that our switchboard broke down. There's a lot of interest out there," he said.

While Sweden is generally considered technologically advanced, DN says the Scandinavian nation lies far behind countries like Japan and South Korea when it comes to the number of people who use mobile phones to surf the Internet.

"Many people (in Sweden) think it's complicated (to Internet surf on their mobile phones) and they don't know how much it costs," the paper's head of marketing Johan Othelius told DN.

"Now we're removing that obstacle," he added.

Canadian Oil-Field Worker Gets $80,000 Cellphone Bill

A Canadian oil-field worker, stunned to get a C$85,000 ($83,700) cell phone bill, has had the charges reduced to C$3,400, but is still fighting them.

Piotr Staniaszek, a 22-year-old oil and gas well tester in rural northwest Alberta, became a figure of international media attention this week when his father went to the press to complain about the size of his son's bill.

Staniaszek's father, also named Piotr Staniaszek, said his son thought he could use his new phone as a modem for his computer as part of his C$10 unlimited browser plan from Bell Mobility, a division of Bell Canada.

He downloaded movies and other high-resolution files unaware of the charges they would incur.

"He's working in the field sometimes, alone, in the shack. What to do? Drink vodka or go on the Internet?" Staniaszek senior told Reuters on Thursday from Calgary, Alberta.

"Now it's $85,000 and nobody told him," he said.

According to the invoice, his son rang up C$60,000 in charges in November, and they have since climbed to C$85,000.

Staniaszek senior said Bell has agreed to reduce the charges to C$3,400 for "goodwill."

"It's still high...Who can afford it?" he said, adding his son can barely make payments on a new truck he bought for work, and will continue to fight the charges.

A Bell spokesman said the plan is not intended for downloading files to a computer, and that's clear in his contract.

Staniaszek said his son did not want to talk to the press after the interest his story has received and that he is afraid to use his cell phone and incur more long-distance charges.

FCC Reveals Samsung t819 for T-Mobile

T-Mobile will have a third choice for its upcoming 3G Internet service beyond the Nokia 6263 and Samsung t639 shortly after it launches in the near future, the FCC has unintentionally revealed through a newly public filing.

The Samsung t819 should be a slider alternative to the t639 and bring support for 1,700MHz UMTS access that makes video streaming and faster web browsing possible with the carrier.

Legacy support for T-Mobile's EDGE network is also known to be included with the device.

Like the t639, the t819 will carry a 1.3-megapixel camera and should have a microSD slot for storing its media as well as some form of Bluetooth.

Although a rough copy of the manual confirms T-Mobile's involvement with the phone, an actual release date and a price are unknown and may not come until early next year, reflecting a delay in T-Mobile's 3G service that will put it past the original late 2007 release window.

Pedometer/Step Counter for the N95

It seems that Nokia N95's built-in accelerometer is the hottest news around these days. Ever since the plug-in allowing 3rd party applications access to its data went public applications have been popping up constantly.

The latest of them is the Activity Monitor and is developed by Nokia guys themselves as an alternative for the Sports tracker application. It basically acts as an electronic diary, storing summaries of your activity loads.

Thanks to the accelerometer the Activity monitor is able to count the number of steps, the distance covered and the energy expended during each training session. Well actually the distance and energy are estimates based on your age and height but on most cases these should be pretty accurate.

Mentioning accuracy, the developers suggest that you should attach the phone to your belt or upper arm to achieve best results. You can also place it in your pocket and it is still said to work well, but if you put it in a bag that you hold in hand underestimation of your steps is quite probable. Inevitably sometimes false step are detected and as the authors say this is mostly when cycling or driving.

The Activity Monitor is currently available for Nokia N95 and N95 8GB.

The Nokia N95 classic needs a memory card in order to run the application. Also be aware that the Activity Monitor drains quite a large amount of battery power thanks to the constant use of the accelerometer so you might want to switch it off when you are not doing laps on the stadium.

On a different note we want to remind you that today another cool application, using the accelerometer is expected to be released. The RotateMe, which will allow the screen of Nokia N95 and N95 8GB to automatically rotate is developed by Oueldi Samir and at least on the demo videos it seems to perform great. We are yet to test to the application and see if it is actually that good.

Google Optimizes Picasa for the iPhone

Google today continued its Web service optimizations for Apple's iPhone with the release of a new iPhone interface for Picasa, the company's photo-sharing site.

According to the company's blog, one Google developed decided to revamp the site for the popular device when found that it had "some very cool AJAXy features," which unfortunately were designed with a "desktop web-browsing experience in mind."

On the heels of its homepage revamp for the iPhone, the new Picasa interface offers easy access to albums, displays pictures with comments, and includes an easy search feature. The iPhone-friendly interface offers slideshow options as well as both landscape and portrait support (like all webpages).

"Today, I'm happy to tell you that we've just released this new iPhone interface for Picasa. After you go to Picasa on your iPhone and log in, you can quickly see all your albums that you've uploaded to Picasa Web," the London-based software engineer wrote in the Google Mobile Blog.

"If you click on any of the albums, you can get a full view of your picture with comments from your friends. Or you can click on Slideshow, sit back and watch the pictures scroll."

Users also can view their friends' albums through favorites.

The interface is currently only available in English, thus users will have to change their language preference if they are located in an non-English-speaking country.

Google's Picasa has an iPhoto plugin that automatically uploads photos to the free photo sharing service. It works with iPhoto 4/5/6/'08 and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

iPhone Predicted to be Target of Malware Hackers in 2008

The iPhone has been the target of many users who wanted to customize the way it looks and hackers who wanted to use the device on other wireless networks since it was released in June.

However, Arbor Networks predicts the seriousness of attacks on the iPhone will increase in 2008.

According to Arbor’s Security and Engineering Response Team (ASERT) the attacks will likely to be in the form of drive by attacks — malware embedded into seemingly harmless information, images or other media that actually perform dangerous actions when rendered on the iPhone’s Web browser.

“With the scrutiny the iPhone has received since its launch earlier this year over network lock-in, ASERT believes that hackers will be enticed by the possibility of attacking Apple users and the opportunity to ‘be the first’ to hack a new platform,” the report said.

Apple has been involved in an ongoing battle with hackers for months. While the hacks have not been malicious, the process of unlocking the phone and allowing it to work with networks other than AT&T has caused Apple to react.

NTT DoCoMo Launches Second 3G Phone for Children

NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and its eight regional subsidiaries announced today that the FOMA™ F801i, a new child-friendly 3G mobile phone loaded with special features for the safety and convenience of children, will go on sale December 20.

Building on the popular FOMA SA800i model that DoCoMo released in March 2006, the F801i offers many new or improved child-friendly features (see attachments) for security, theft/loss prevention, ease of use and more.

In an emergency, the child can quickly switch on the phone's 100-decibel alarm, which produces two types of noise alternately. When the alarm is activated, the phone also emits a bright light (high-intensity LED) that is easily visible to people in the surrounding area.

The phone can be set to automatically notify loved ones when the alarm is activated, and provide the handset's current location as well. Computer-generated phone calls can be placed to up to three registered numbers and messages can be sent to registered individuals who subscribe to the i-mode™ location service called imadoco search™. In addition, the child can discreetly message their location to a registered imadoco search user by simply pushing a button on the side of the phone.

If the phone's power is switched off, a presetting can enable the handset to automatically turn back on (in as little as five minutes) and message the incident and the phone's location to a registered DoCoMo phone.

An amulet-style remote controller worn by the child can be used to make a misplaced phone beep if within a range of about 10 meters (may vary with usage environment). If the user moves even farther from the handset, the phone can automatically lock (requires presetting). If the handset remains out of the amulet's range for more than five minutes, a message can be sent automatically to a registered DoCoMo phone.

The F801i is ergonomically designed for easy use by small hands, and its waterproof body can withstand accidental immersion (up to 30 minutes at one-meter depth) or concentrated water sprays.

The phone's soft-rectangle shape and round speaker grille enclosed by a ring-shape LED were conceived by renowned designer Kashiwa Sato to symbolize safety, peace of mind, creativity and the future.

Kylie Minogue Launches Mobile Phone Website for Fans

Kylie Minogue fans now have a new way to indulge their obsessions -- via mobile phone.

Kylie Konnect (http://www.Kyliekonnect.com), launched November 2 to coincide with the digital release of her single "2 Hearts," combined universal handset access with the concept of an Internet fan community. It may well be the first artist-based social networking platform of its kind.

Members can create a profile, write blogs, upload photos, download content and connect with other fans all over the world by mobile phone or Web browser. Minogue maintains her own Kylie Konnect profile where fans can access regularly updated news items, blog posts and a photo gallery.

The site has drawn more than 10,000 users.

The Australian pop star's new album, "X," meanwhile, recently debuted at No. 4 on the U.K. album chart. A U.S. release has not yet been scheduled. Minogue's last regular-issue studio album, "Body Language," hit No. 42 on the Billboard 200 in 2003.

Minogue's U.K. label Parlophone, which created the site with London firm New Visions Mobile, will update it with exclusive features and content, including music, video, news, tour information and contests. Kylie Konnect furthers the concept of the Lily Allen Loyalty Club, a mobile-access fan site that Parlophone and New Visions launched in 2006, which offers members points toward exclusive prizes.

iPhone for China in 2008?

After rumors earlier this week that negotiations with China Mobile broke down, Chen Jingsheng, vice president of D.Phone, has told Chinese media that D.Phone has signed a strategic agreement with Apple for the iPhone and iPhone will be first sold at D.Phone's stores after it enters the Chinese market.

Chen says that iPhone will come to China around the Spring Festival holiday of 2008 and will be sold at D.Phone's retail stores. However, Chinese media still reports that China Mobile will be iPhone's premier partner in China though the parties' negotiation reportedly ended due to disputes on a revenue split. Those news reports say it is unlikely that Apple will cooperate with a mobile phone dealer like D.Phone for the iPhone.

Some other analysts quoted by local media say they believe the spreading of the news that Apple has signed with D.Phone for the iPhone might be a strategy that Apple has taken to force China Mobile to make a concession in their negotiations.

The MMS app is not yet released via Installer. You can download a copy directly from Swirly Space and install it manually. For more information, check out this ModMyiFone thread.

Chinese iPhone Knock-off for $200

A new Chinese iPhone knock-off is being sold on the internet, billed as "High quality copy UNLOCKED IPHONE AV-P688 SIMILAR STYPLE IPOD GSM CELL PHONE WITH MP3 MP4 FUNCTION”. iTech News Net reports that performing a Google search for the device yields several results for sites that are selling the imitation iPhone.

While the iPhone features simplistic finger-driven touch functionality, the doppelganger uses four physically movable buttons surrounding the home button to navigate around the device, and reportedly requires a stylus for the screen.

The CECT P168 sells for $200. While the P168 is merely imitation of the iPhone, some of the features are still impressive. The device features a seven hour talk time with 340 hours standby, and has a built-in two megapixel camera, although some reports say the camera is in actuality 1.3 megapixel. The AV-P688 only comes with 1MB worth of built-in memory, but supports flash cards for storage purposes. The device is also unlocked, so it is not bound to any particular carrier.

The biggest downside about the CECT P168 is that the screen features a screen resolution of 176 x 220 pixels – much lower than the iPhones 320 x 480 160ppi display.

Ten One Design, announces the product launch of the Pogo Stylus, specifically designed for the iPhone and iPod touch.

The Pogo Stylus is the first iPhone-compatible stylus. It offers the user faster typing, greater comfort, and a familiar input method for navigation. The Pogo Stylus sports an ultra-light aluminum body with a matte anodized finish and an advanced foam tip that is compatible with the multi-touch screen. This tip, with less surface area than a fingertip, gives the user greater accuracy when typing on the iPhone keyboard and navigating the user interface.

Those users with larger fingers or long fingernails who find typing difficult will appreciate the greater accuracy the Pogo Stylus affords. In addition to eliminating typos and mistaken touches, the Pogo Stylus also keeps the screen free of smudges and grease.

In order to provide ready and portable access, the Pogo Stylus includes a Travel Clip. The clip firmly hugs the contours of iPhone and iPod touch and secures the stylus along the side of each.

The Pogo Stylus will be available for purchase on December 1, 2007 for $24.95.

Verzio Launches First Dual Sim Phone with Triband 3G

Singapore-based Verzio has launched what it claims is the world's first dual-SIM phone with triband 3G, called Duplii. While not much has been revealed about how its dual-SIM functionality actually works, the handset apparently supports "simultaneous dual mode standby" and is "switch-capable between two incoming calls." The Duplii also comes with a 2-megapixel camera, 2.2-inch QVGA TFT display, expandable memory card slot, and a built-in music and video player.

In addition to Duplii, Verzio has announced the lower-end dual-SIM handset, Twinn, which it also claims is the world's first EDGE/E-GPRS triband dual-SIM slider phone. Some of its key features include a 1.3-megapixel camera, 2.2-inch QCIF TFT display, TransFlash card slot and multimedia player.

According to the company, Duplii and Twinn have launched only in the Philippines. However, it is in talks with distributors in Hong Kong and Singapore and expects a global launch in the first quarter of 2008. The Duplii and Twinn are retailing for $350 and $280, respectively.

Samsung has recently also announced its first dual-SIM handset, the SGH-D880. Slated for a Singapore rollout in December, the D880 will come with a 3-megapixel camera and FM radio, but not 3G/HSDPA.

Apple Threatens Iphone Sellers in Singapore's Sim Lim Square with US$690 ( S$1000 ) Fine

Apple recently threatened retailers in a Singapore mall with legal action if they continue to sell unlocked iPhones, prompting many to stop selling the handsets, The Straits Times newspaper reported Friday.

"Apple threatened in an e-mail to go after them for illegally 'unlocking' parallel imported iPhones," the newspaper reported Friday, citing several anonymous sources. Apple threatened to pursue damages of S$1,000 (US$691) for every unlocked iPhone sold by retailers in Sim Lim Square, a local mall full of electronics shops, the report said.

The Straits Times report indicated Apple's threats rest on a claim that unlocking the iPhone was a violation of the software license agreement. That is not the case in the U.S., where laws provide a specific exemption that allows users to unlock cell phones.

Apple was not available to comment on the report.

The iPhone is not officially available in Singapore, but unlocked handsets have been on sale for some time in local electronics market, as they have in other countries around Asia. However, calls to several shops in Sim Lim Square Friday confirmed that unlocked iPhones have become scarce.

"We used to sell it, but not anymore," said a sales manager at Royal Plus Pacific, an electronics shop in Sim Lim Square. The shop stopped selling iPhones because they ran out of stock, he said, adding they hadn't received a threatening e-mail from Apple.

No GPS on your Phone? Use Google Maps

Google has revealed the second version of their Google Maps application that can now localize your position based on the cell tower information triangulation. The new "My Location" feature allows the convenient use of Google Maps on handsets with or without GPS (official Google video above).

The mobile tower information allows the "My Location" feature to pinpoint your location with a relative accuracy of around 1000 m. That's not that great, however reportedly, in certain cases accuracy can go to as high as 200 m.

The service will work wherever Google Maps for Mobile is currently available. The Google Maps for Mobile 2.0 application can currently be installed on Java, BlackBerry, and Symbian S60 devices. There is even a native version of the application for Windows Mobile. Google Maps for Mobile 2.0 is still in beta development but it works reliably and can be downloaded here. Java phone users should point their mobile phone browser to http://www.google.com/gmm in order to download the Java application.
