Sony Ericsson W960i First Unboxing Pictures

With the existence of these pictures of the retail package of the 8GB Walkman W960i, it won't be long before the phone will be readily available in shops...

(it looks like the bluetooth headset which was supposed to be included in the package has been removed--as seen in the white paper posted recently at the SE website, and no deskstand included unlike the P1i)

UK's Carphone Warehouse Misleads iPhone Customers on Insurance

Staff at the UK's biggest mobile phone retailer, Carphone Warehouse, have been caught misleading customers about Apple's popular iPhone handset.

Undercover researchers from BBC One's Watchdog found staff made false claims about what would happen if a phone was stolen and had not been insured. This was in the hope customers would take out the store's own insurance. The firm said there could be "some element of confusion among an isolated number of sales consultants".

But Carphone Warehouse added it did not believe that the "small number of complaints" were "a fair reflection of the experience of thousands of iPhone customers who have received insurance advice in our stores". The findings come just a year after Carphone Warehouse was fined £245,000 by the Financial Services Authority for breaking the rules on selling insurance.

Viewers complained to Watchdog that they had been told if they lost their iPhone, they would have to buy an entirely new 18 month contract - at a minimum cost of £630. But that is not true. Customers would have to buy a new handset but the contract itself would continue.

In three out of five stores visited by Watchdog, researchers were told the same. And at one store, they were also told insurance offered by O2 shops - the only other UK mobile retailer authorised to sell the iPhone - would not offer as much cover as theirs, which again was untrue. Staff at the stores receive commission on all insurance and phones they sell.

LG Cellphone Battery Explodes, Owner Killed

Authorities in South Korea are investigating the death of a man amid reports he may have been killed by an exploding mobile phone battery. He was found at his workplace with a melted battery in his shirt pocket and punctured lungs and heart.

Phone maker LG said the cell would have been rigorously tested and was only sold in Korea but it could not comment further because of the police probe.

The 33-year-old South Korean was found in a quarry where he worked in Cheongwon County in North Chungcheong Province, 135km (85 miles) south of Seoul, police said.

A co-worker said the victim was bleeding from the nose and his shirt had soot in the shape of a phone. Kim Hun, a doctor at Chungbuk National University Hospital, told South Korea's Kookmin Ilbo: "There were burns on his left chest, and fractures of his ribs and spine as well as haemorrhaging in the lungs. "Considering all these factors, it seems that high pressure from an explosion damaged his lungs and heart, leading to his death." A police investigation is under way.

Phone maker LG issued a statement saying it rigorously tested its products and the lithium-ion polymer batteries had been approved for consumers by independent agencies. It said: "We are not in a position to discuss this incident further, as an investigation by the Korean police department and the National Institute of Scientific Investigation (Nisi) is underway.

"We confirm that the handset which is presumed to be involved in the incident is manufactured and sold only in Korea."

Korean media said this was the first case of a suspected phone battery fatality in the country. The case in China's Gansu province was attributed to the man's high working temperatures. The explosion apparently drove rib splinters through his heart and he died after emergency surgery. High temperatures would not have been the cause on such a cold day in a Korean quarry, local media said.

Fring Available for Nokia E51, Announces fringMe! Widget

Folks behind Fring have announced a new fringME! widget, allowing users of the popular VoIP client with web sites, blogs or social networking profiles to interact (chat) with their visitors. But, it’s not all about chatting and sharing your presence with your community and/or your friends — in case you have a GPS equipped Symbian-based phone (N95, N95 8GB, N82), other people can also view your location in real time via Google Maps! Wow!

In addition to the new widget, Fring team has also announced that owners of Nokia’s latest member of the ESeries devices, E51, can download Fring and start saving money on free (or low cost) VoIP phone calls.

Nokia Picks Up GyPSii GPS Application for the N95 and 6110

Small Finnish handset maker Benefon, which has changed its business name to GeoSentric, said Nokia has picked its social networking application for the Nokia GPS handsets N95 and 6110.

The platform, branded GyPSii, which is already compatible with Windows Mobile software based devices and with Symbian and Nokia support, is now available on most mobile phones, Benefon said in a statement.

GyPSii will allow users to upload pictures, videos and sound clips recorded with their phones that are automatically encoded with the location where the picture was taken or the recording was made.

Using the platform, users can see where their friends are and see and search each other's saved places.

Combined with mobile Internet access, GPS (global positioning system) is seen in the industry as adding a new dimension to social networking that could also have implications for the media business.

T-Mobile Germany to Sell Unlocked Iphones for $1500 or 999 Euros

It's finally a fact - Apple iPhone unlocked will be selling officially. We know it's hard to believe but T-Mobile has formally announced it today. And if you are just starting to think it's too good to be true here goes the sobering fact. The handset is going to cost 999 Euro. Yeah, you heard it just right - about $1500 a piece is what T-Mobile is going to charge for the precious unlocked iPhone.

Furthermore, the handset won't be available for online or telephone orders and will only be sold in the telecom's official shops. In case you wondered how come T-Mobile is selling unlocked iPhones just 11 days after the official start of sales in Germany, a court ruling has outlawed the exclusive sales of phones on contract only. With the unlocked handsets costing an arm and a leg, we really wonder if the court decision is of much point really.

The good news is mostly for the customers who bought the iPhone between the 19th of November and the day the first unlocked handsets are released. Their iPhones can be unlocked for free.

P1i Camera Green Tint Problem Solved thru Hardware Repair?

Before

After

As of one of the owners of the Sony Ericsson P1i, my shots from the camera have been plagued with the notorious "green tint" problem. This has been a very popular subject at the esato forum, with members debating if the tint is a hardware or software issue.

With the latest post of a member of the said forum, who just had his camera module replaced, it is apparently a hardware issue (before and after pictures above).

Hope SE will replace all problematic camera modules of P1i users with warranty covered phones...

Sony Ericsson PSP Phone Rumors Rekindled by Sony COO

Watch out Apple and Google, Sony may just surprise the world with a ‘Playstation Phone’. The Japanese company is toying with the idea of developing a ‘Playstation phone’ that will combine the power of a gaming console with that of a mobile phone, a top company official told ET.

If it hits the market, the gadget could well be the next big thing for the struggling consumer electronics giant and give it a unique product to cater to two of the fastest growing segments in the market, namely gaming and mobile telephony. Sony Computer Entertainment co-chief operating officer Jim Ryan told ET that a Playstation Phone is a future possibility: “The playstation is a proven success and so is Sony Ericsson. Convergence with the two arms working together is definitely plausible.” SCE already works with Sony Electronics in jointly bundling Bravia with the Playstation franchise.

However, Mr Ryan said that it could be a while before a commercial launch of such a device happens given that there are a lot of issues that need to be addressed before a Playstation phone hit the markets. “What has been done is finding a match between a camera and a mobile phone, and that has been done wherein the mobile phone features are not reasonably inhibited and the camera is also a reasonably competitive product. It is hugely intellectually seductive to have a console-oriented phone.

He believes that the way this would happen though is the phone being superimposed on the console, unlike camera phones where the camera was put into the phone. What could make the exercise tricky though is the small screen size and limited key space, which could impact the gaming experience.

Nokia E61i Latest Firmware Update Available

There is a new firmware available for Nokia E61i. There is nothing about the firmware on Nokia's device software update page yet, but the software is available when using Nokia Software Updater. The new firwmare version is 2.0633.65.01 .

It is important to note that availability of new device firmware depends on a number of factors. Region, language and of course carrier version are variables that influence when new firmware is available.

Note: Predictive text available in phone settings, but does not function?!
(qwerty phones from Nokia do not usually have predictive text)

The update, also includes changes/enhancements to:

  • Web browser
  • Bluetooth
  • VoIP
  • WLAN

Motorola Plans to Release 20 to 30 Phones in 2008

We’re glad to see Motorola starting to claw their way back to their days as a leader in the mobile industry. Moto just secured a significant portion of the top ten 3G handsets sold in the US this past Q3 2007, and they’re not going to just sit back and bask (which is the mistake they made with their initial successes in the Moto RAZR V3) in their achievements. Motorola has announced that they’ll be running a blitz on the mobile space by pushing some 20-30 handsets onto the market in 2008.

While Motorola sits pretty as the 3rd largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world, their stance in Taiwan only measures up to a ho-hum 4th place. Motorola is gunning for the top-spot in the Taiwanese market with this new handset blitz. Bill Chen, newly appointed general manager of mobile device business at Motorola Taiwan, said that “In the coming year, Motorola will also stress strengthening its relations with channel partners in Taiwan and to pursue a balance between sales volume and profitability while gearing up efforts to boost performance.”

If you’re looking forward to Motorola’s Android-based handsets, you might want to make yourself comfortable - as there’s no set timetable for the release of Moto’s new OHA-compliant handset. But, with about two handsets launching every month, Taiwan is going to get their fill of non-Android Motorola mobile phones.

Sony Ericsson Concept Phone with Full Size USB Port

Another handset that tries too hard? Not quite. We actually would like to see this Sony Ericsson mobile phone with a full-size USB port on store shelves. At least that's one designer Vincent Palicki's dream.

But it's far from reality. From the picture, the concept phone is shown together with a Sony Micro Vault Tiny with exposed USB contacts, so we're not sure if flash storage devices with shielded contacts would work. Also, the alphanumeric keypad could do with larger keys and the control panel more tactility. What were we thinking? This is just a concept model.

AT & T Plans to Launch SE K850 by March, LG Vu by January

Remember way back when we caught wind that AT&T was eying Sony Ericsson's initial American 3G efforts -- the Z750 and K850 -- for release? Well, it's looking good! This slide, imploring employees to focus on "exclusives," shows us that AT&T has locked onto launching a version of the K850 as the "Ansel" (seriously?) come next March. Seems like an awfully long time to wait, but in the meantime, we can check out the MediaFLO-equipped LG Vu in January. Why must you make it so hard on us, LG -- Voyager or Vu? Decisions, decisions!

JCB Launches Rugged "Toughphone"

Construction equipment company JCB has announced it will launch what must be the hardest ever handset: the Toughphone.

The construction giant has teamed up with Phones 4u and distributor Data Select to launch the handset, which comes in a uniform JCB yellow hardened rubber case.

The Toughphone is shock, dust, water and drop resistant, and is operational from -20ºc to 60ºc. It is on sale from November and will be manufactured by US company Sonim, which has underlined the phone's durability by offering a three-year guarantee.

As well as the Toughphone's obvious brawn, it is loaded with Bluetooth, Push-To-Talk and tri-band. The device also has built-in dual speakers, which enable it to be heard in noisy environments.

According to JCB consumer products director Matthew Conrad, the handset targets a gap in the market. 'It's reaching out to an area of people who want simplicity and durability.

'Anyone who listens to The Archers on Radio 4 will know that one of the farmers lost his phone in the mud this week. When he found it, the Sim card was fine, but the phone was broken. If only he had a JCB Toughphone!'

The Toughphone will be available in Phones 4u, Speedy Hire and Plumb Centres. It will also be available online at www.phones4u.co.uk.

AT & T Launches First Napster Equipped Phone - Samsung SLM

AT&T's first mobile phone to bring Napster Mobile will come as Samsung SLM (SGH-A747). The device will make it possible to search a music catalog of 5 million songs, preview samples of each song and purchase and download songs at great
speeds.

AT&T subscribers will be able to use this mobile phone to buy and download songs the mobile way. Moreover, the Samsung SLM will also support the full AT&T Mobile Music suite of services, including XM Radio Mobile, Pandora, MusicID song-recognition service and VIP access, a mobile fan club and music-discovery service. All this should make it a handset capable of bringing a great music experience to its owner.

There is also stereo Bluetooth included for listening to music free of any wires and an external memory microSD card support. There is also a 2 megapixel camera included, although this should be of less importance, as Samsung SLM is a music phone and not a camera one. The 3G technology that this device also packs is essential for downloading songs in just a few seconds.

The operator included this device into its offer, just in time for the Christmas season, to make it a fun gift. "The SLM by Samsung represents the best collection thus far of our music, multimedia and messaging services -- just in time for the holidays," said Carlton Hill, vice president of Product Development for AT&T's wireless unit.

The device will bring a large number of services, aside from the Napster Mobile one. The Samsung SGH-A747 SLM phone will also be the first handset to have AT&T's mobile banking application pre-loaded. Moreover, the device is also capable of supporting AT&T's Video Share service.

Samsung SGH-A747 SLM will be available from now on at AT&T for the price of USD 150 with a two-year contract and a USD 50 mail-in rebate.

Security Vulnerability Discovered in Sony Ericsson Phones

Adrian Nowak and Karsten Sohr, research scientists at Bremen university, have discovered a vulnerability in Sony Ericsson phones which gives applications read and write access to the device's system files. This could, for example, be exploited to replace the certificates confirming the origin of programs to be installed. While attackers could use it to install arbitrary software on the devices, users could also replace the logos and ring tones installed for "branding" purposes.

For the installation of malicious software, the user only needs to confirm that the software is allowed to read and write user data. According to the researchers this is standard practice with trusted applications and doesn't, therefore, raise any suspicion. Many of the models sold between 2005 and 2007 are affected: for example K750i, K800i, K810i, T650i and W880i. These models don't run the Symbian OS but a proprietary Sony Ericsson operating system.

Nowak and Sohr used a Java program to demonstrate the flaw. It is still unclear whether the hole is located in the operating system itself or in the Java VM. The scientists didn't want to release any details before Sony Ericsson has had the opportunity to fix the vulnerability. No statement has so far been received from the vendor.

In September, scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for IT security (SIT) discovered a hole in Sony Ericsson's "Code Memo" password program that allows attackers to crack stored passwords.

SE W960i Bluetooth Headset Removed from Sales Package

With the impending availability of the much-awaited W960i Walkman phone, here comes a piece of bad news...

When the W960i was first officially announced via a press release, Sony Ericsson proudly announced the inclusion of a Bluetooth Headset, together with a stereo handsfree wired headset.

But as of the latest white paper dated October 29, found at the SE Developer World website, it seems they have unfortunately decided, at the last minute, not to include the Bluetooth headset with the sales package.

(I guess this would actually be good news if the initial price offering for the W960i would be substantially lessened due to the exclusion of the Bluetooth headset...)

Sony Ericsson No. 1 in J.D. Power's List, Nokia Below Average

J.D. Power has announced that Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications’ handsets has scored the highest in overall customer satisfaction among American and Canadian consumers in the latest survey.

Sony Ericsson ranked highest in features, battery life, physical design, operation and durability among the American consumers. The manufacturers are ranked in different categories, and can at maximum achieve a perfect 1000 score, however it is extremely unlikely that this will ever happen.

These results reflected Sony Ericsson’s strong commitment to the North American market, said Najmi Jarwala, who’s the President of Sony Ericsson North American market. This is a market where SEMC has struggled to gain market share, but things seem to be turning now.

FCC Reveals an N82 Without 3G, WLAN

Above is a screenshot of the current Nokia N82 thanks to Device Status...

Notice how it is RM-313. On the FCC we have something called RM-314, hat tip to Howard Forums. With a little bit of investigation it became clearly obvious via Forum Nokia that their would be a second Nokia N82:

The Nokia N82 is a GSM/WCDMA dual mode portable multimedia computer supporting EGSM 850/900/1800/1900/WCDMA 2100 HSDPA and WLAN or EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 for some regions.

Judging by the label listed on the FCC, this might be something for the Asian market, but it may as well come to the states as a cheaper, castrated N82.

Motorola ROKR E8 Hands-on Live Pictures

The Motorola ROKR E8 has often been referred to as the "morphing phone," and why shouldn’t it?

The keyboard actually changes based on what function of the phone you wish to use. When you’re making a call at the home screen, you’d obviously want the full keyboard there.

When you’re about to snap a flick, you get zoom in and out keys, a playback key for viewing recently taken photos, and a video camera key for switching to video mode.

In music mode, the keyboard displays next and previous keys, a play / pause key, a shuffle playback key, and a repeat key.

The actual device is pretty sharp, too. The entire front is like one smooth surface with a huge touch-sensitive "ROKR" (scroll) wheel in the middle.

What’s incredible, is that there is absolutely no tactile feedback on any of the keys when the phone is off. It’s just a flat surface with little dots to help guide your fingers. But when it’s on, haptics lends support when you’re pressing a button, but it actually makes the keys press.
Hard to explain, but there is definitely tactile feedback on a key press and not just the normal haptics vibrate.

As far as we can tell, the Motorola E8 features a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth (with various profiles including A2DP), and is a quad-band GSM/EDGE device. You’ll also notice a 3.5mm headset jack at the top of the phone, which is a little awkwardly placed if you ask us. The Motorola E8 runs a newer version of the MOTOMAGX platform, so Motorola RAZR 2 V8 users will have no problem getting used to the new handset.

We’re trying to track down a release date now, and we have no word on what carriers in the U.S. will be jumping aboard to carry it at this point. All in all, it’s not going to take over the world, but with its thin and sleek profile complete with a unique keyboard and excellent call quality, we could see ourselves using this every day.

N82 Initial Hands-on Pictures and Impressions

*Feels very speedy overall, camera starts very quickly. The lens is recessed and has the sliding cover, just the way I like it. The camera is activated by a switch, let me tell you this thing feels incredible to use. It has a nice click to it and reacts very very quickly. The images are again very clean with very little image noise. Remember those N73 pictures with the over usage of edge-enhancment and noise reduction? Those days are finally gone as the N82 are very neutral, has very little noise and they have kept the image enhancement to a minimum. The N82 clearly makes the best pictures in the Nseries, beating even the N95.

*The N82 is a huge finger print magnet, especially the front. But the white back won’t show finger prints that easily. But it does make for a slippery device. The design is very oblong, looks very N73-ish and in fact it’s supposed to be the successor to that device.

*The phone feels very speedy overall. It has native auto-rotation. The rotation almost instantly, even when using TV-out. Only negative point it that the camera and the icons don’t re-orient when you turn the phone.

*Just like the N95 8GB and N81 the screen is same height as the rest of the body.

*Stereo speakers are not on the opposite sites, but are both on the right side.

*microUSB is present on the left side with microSD support.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia unveils the Nokia N82, the latest multimedia computer optimized for photography, navigation and internet connectivity. With the tools to discover the places and moments worth capturing, and the capabilities to capture and share them instantaneously, the Nokia N82 offers photography enthusiasts an enhanced camera experience.

"The evolution of camera capabilities in mobile devices has been extremely fast over the past years. With the Nokia N82 we have reached such a superior level in image quality, speed and ease of use that not only does it outperform any other cameraphone on the market, but it's also a very credible alternative for single purpose digital still cameras," says Satu Ehrnrooth, head of Nokia Nseries Cameras Category, Multimedia, Nokia. "In addition to the high-end camera, the Nokia N82 also enables you to navigate and discover new places, enjoy your music, browse the web, play games, chat online and be part of the global web 2.0 community wherever you go. Capture your experiences

With a 5 megapixel camera, powerful Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss optics, the Nokia N82 delivers remarkably vivid photographs, even in low-light conditions. Fast camera activation, autofocus with a dedicated autofocus assist lamp, fast reloading between shots and DVD-like quality video capture make it a truly convenient and credible tool for capturing and telling your life stories.

Thanks to the 2GB microSD card in the standard Nokia N82 sales package, you can store up to 900 high-resolution photos or up to 84 minutes of high quality video on the device.

"The Nokia N82 gives the best ever camera and navigation experience in one stylish premium device. Just imagine what kind of possibilities this will open up and how much richer your every day life experiences can be! The sophisticated design and glossy looks appeal to men and women who are conscious of their style and want to impress with the latest in technology," Satu Ehrnrooth continues.

Share your stories
With high speed Wi-Fi connectivity and one-click upload to online communities, the Nokia N82 makes sharing your experiences and discoveries easy. When viewing a picture or video, simply one press of a button starts uploading it while you carry on using the device for other purposes.

Or you can impress your friends with multimedia slideshows - complete with music and effects - on the high resolution display or on a compatible TV.

The Nokia N82 comes with the new content driven 3D multimedia menu and includes a convenient orientation sensor that rotates the user interface automatically between horizontal and portrait mode. For quick and easy access to entertainment content, the Nokia N82 also supports the Ovi family of Nokia internet services, including Nokia Music Store, N-Gage games** and Nokia Maps.

The Nokia N82 is available now in key markets with an estimated, pre-tax, unsubsidized sales price of approximately 450 euros.

SE W910i Recalled by Orange

Sony Ericsson W910 has been taken off the market after a great number of such mobile phones presented various problems. Unsatisfied customers are returning them at a great rate, much to the panic of Orange stores and the producer as well.

It's a real shame to see that Sony Ericsson seems to be experiencing problems with its W910 phone model as well. After all, it was one of the most appealing and evolved devices that this producer recently brought out on the market.

Among the errors that Sony Ericsson W910 seems to be packing is that it switches itself off after ten seconds and does not answer calls. These are pretty shocking issues with the device, as they are actually the most basic features that a cellular is supposed to handle, like staying turned on when the battery is full and allowing the user to place and receive calls.

Orange offered a new mobile phone instead of the faulty one to all customers that came in to complain about their purchases. Still, this didn't seem to solve the problem, as many of them returned just a few days later to complain that the new device had the same problems. This led to Orange's decision of recalling the first shipment of Sony Ericsson W910.

The handset is one of the top devices that Orange had to offer in its lineup. With 3G, a huge 2.4 inch screen and 2 megapixel camera the phone proves to be one of the most evolved from this producer's Walkman line of devices. Still, the situation is even more shameful as the number of handsets coming from this producer which have been reported to have software or design problems has been pretty high over the years.

The producer now claims that all problems have been solved and that Sony Ericsson W910 is ready to meet its owners at Orange retail stores.

Nokia Widsets Emerges from Beta

Nokia today announced that its innovative Internet service called WidSets, launched one year ago, has emerged from Beta to a new service platform. With the new platform WidSets will offer improved usability by localizing mobile clients and improving mobile widget library. WidSets will also bring advertising in as the primary business model. WidSets works on Java enabled handsets from a range of manufacturers and utilizes widgets, so users can have one-click access to real-time online content without needing to use a mobile browser.

"We've been delighted with the feedback we've had from the Beta trials of WidSets," said Jarmo Jokinen, Director of WidSets, Nokia Emerging Business Unit. "During that time, we've had more than 3 million users register for the WidSets service on more than 300 models of mobile device. We've valued the early feedback, which has enabled us to launch a more compelling service for users and content providers."

The new platform offers a dynamic search feature and an improved widget creation tool for quicker, simpler and more personalized options for creating widgets. And now it is really easy: enter the web address, click to select the feed and then you will have a personal widget! Around 90 percent of the current WidSets' content is already user generated, but the WidSets team has recently added many new widgets and made it easier for users to find local and also non-English-language content.

The new Explore feature for finding widgets offers an option to perform a live search, filter through recommended widgets, or go through tags or categories, and download them for use on mobile devices.

WidSets now offers a unique advertising model to commercial customers for providing two-way-interaction between the advertiser and their customers or prospects. A great example is a movie theater widget: the user chooses the city they are looking for and can then see what movies are on, in which theater, and whether there are seats available. A perfect match of benefits for movie going consumers, and the advertiser!

On the WidSets website people can review the widgets and see the latest, most popular or top rated widgets and share those with others. And now this can also be done from the mobile device. One of the latest widgets is for AccuWeather.com, which is expected to rapidly become one of the top ranked widgets in the WidSets library.

The WidSets mobile dashboard can also now be shared. This means that when creating a profile, users may share their own dashboard and widgets with the others, and see what the other "WidSeteers" are using as well as how they look like, thanks to the user images available in dashboards.

Nokia plans to pre-install WidSets in tens of millions of mobile phones during 2008, and enabling service support in tens of different languages. The recently unveiled Nokia 8800 Arte which will start shipping in the fourth quarter of 2007 will be the first handset to offer WidSets to its style-conscious consumers. In addition, users can already get started with WidSets via the Download! folder on all Nokia Nseries and Eseries devices.

WidSets works on a wide variety of mobile phone brands, and is already compatible with more than 300 mobile devices. Users can easily download WidSets from www.widsets.com or on their mobile from get.widsets.com.

Nokia Announces 8800 Arte , 8800 Sapphire Arte

Nokia today unveiled a premium pair of handsets aimed at the most discerning and style-conscious consumers. The new Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte bring 3G capabilities to the highly acclaimed Nokia 8800 series which features an elegant and sophisticated design theme that takes inspiration from nature and sets it apart from the crowd.

The Nokia 8800 Arte will start shipping in the fourth quarter of 2007 with an estimated retail price of 1000 EUR before taxes and subsidies. The Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte will follow in the first quarter of 2008 and retail for approximately 1150 EUR before taxes and subsidies.

The Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte combine elegant appearance and uncompromised functionality. On the surface, the seamless metal and glass body gives the Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte an incomparable sense of style, while under the skin their hearts are driven by pure innovation.

By tapping the steel surface below the display, an analogue clock appears - indicating time in its most classic form. Incoming calls on a Nokia Arte handset can be silenced gracefully with the "turn-to-mute" feature - allowing owners to quiet their phone inconspicuously by simply turning over the phone, screen-side down. Other state-of-the-art features include:

- Stunning 2.0" QVGA 240x320 pixels, OLED display with up to 16 million colors
- 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera with 8x digital zoom
- 3G capabilities
- 1 GB built in memory space
- MicroUSB all-in-one-connector
- Anti-fingerprint coating on metal and glass

Both the Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte feature a high-end metal and glass composition, creating their classic, iconic style. A smooth slide mechanism - comprised of state-of-the art ball bearings and a unique spring mechanism - ensures each handset is a pleasure to touch and behold.

The Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte adds to the sense of exclusivity by further enhancing its polished steel case with a genuine sapphire gem stone and an accent of soft leather, creating an even more rich, sensual feel.

Continuing a tradition of incorporating exclusive soundtracks in its premium handsets, Nokia has invited the internationally-acclaimed master producers Kruder & Dorfmeister to add their standout musical style by creating a unique compilation for these new devices. Owners of the Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte will be able to enjoy an exclusive videotrack and soundtrack composed by Kruder & Dorfmeister with visuals by Fritz Fitzke - adding an extra touch of sophistication and individuality to both handsets.

Each handset comes with an assortment of mobile accessories that further complement the exquisite experience of the Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte. This includes the elegantly designed Nokia BH-803 Bluetooth headset with Active Noise Cancellation and touch sensitive volume adjustment. To add an element of sophistication and security, each handset comes with a leather pouch with a linen-lining and a separate matching desk stand.

SE K850i and W910i HSDPA Problem?

Sony Ericsson K850 and W910 are both listed as HSDPA-capable phones, but in extensive tests in several locations all over Stockholm Mobil Magazine has not been able to get more than regular 3G speeds, never any faster connections.

A first call to Sony Ericsson Technical Support gives us the clue that an icon the a H- or 3G+ symbol is shown when the phone is connected via HSDPA. This icon is never shown in the display during our tests. A later contact with Sony Ericsson suggests that the icon does not show HSDPA connection.

- The icon is not an indicator of the speed available. It is only connected to various parameters of the mobile network, Rikard Skogberg, Category Manager at Sony Ericsson tells us.

Connecting our phones, two different Sony Ericson W910 and one Sony Ericsson K850, to a computer measuring data bit rate gives us the same answer as before. The phones do not provide HSDPA speeds. We have performed the tests in several different locations in Stockholm with HSDPA coverage available and with SIM cards from both mobile operators Telia and 3, both cards working fine serving HSDPA speeds when used in phones from competitors like LG and Nokia.

Hearing about the results of our tests Rikard Skoglund is surprised.
- We have not got any feedback regarding this from our operator partners.

On Thursday evening Skogberg tells us they have been able to connect in HSDPA speeds using the 3 HSDPA network, but that connecting at the same speed using Telia's network failed.

In a written statement following our interview with Rikard Skogberg Sony Ericsson states that they have been able to connect booth W910 and K850 at HSDPA speeds and once again emphasizes that no feedback regarding this problem had reached Sony Ericsson.

Sony Ericsson has today been given the opportunity to examine one of the three phones Mobil Magazine has been using performing these tests. However, Sony Ericsson's own Technical Support has given us the information no additional setting is needed except for the usual 3G data settings and the phones used is equipped with the latest software available.

According to Rikard Skogberg performing tests later with the very same phone has been able to connect in HSDPA speeds using Three and Telenor networks in Kista and the Telia network in Farsta.

There is however not yet any explanation to why Mobil's tests using usb-cable and Sony Ericssons own software did not show the same results.

Apple Iphone UK Launch

The most eagerly awaited gadget in history went on sale at precisely 6.02pm - a gimmick reflecting the role of O2 as sole network provider - to cheers from thousands of people who had queued in the cold to buy one.

Some had camped overnight under umbrellas to ensure they would be among the first to get their hands on the £269 combined phone, digital music player, camera and internet browser.

They turned up in force despite suggestions that could save their money and buy "unlocked" handsets in France when they go on sale later this month.

All iPhone owners in the UK have to sign up to an 18-month contract with O2, costing up to £55 a month.

But French law dictates that mobile phone users should be able to use their handsets on the network provider of their choice.

This means, in theory, that Britons will be able to travel to France, buy an unlocked phone and then use it with their network provider in the UK.

But that possibility did nothing to deter Nik Fletcher, 22, a computer student who set up camp outside Apple's flagship London store 34 hours before the device went on sale.

"It's not really an insult to me being labelled a geek or a nerd," he said. "I am someone that works in the technology industry. It's my passion. If the iPhone delivers on its promise and hype it will have all been worth it."

However, many in the queue said they were planning to "unlock" the phone to make it work with other network providers and avoid having to sign up to the O2 contract.

The website shopping.com, which provides links to the Carphone Warehouse and O2 sites, received 27,000 searches for the iPhone between 8.30am and 12.30pm today.

At the peak of activity, 10,000 used the site to search for the Apple gadget in just one hour.

The phones are being sold at more than 1,300 Apple, O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores across Britain.

Symbian Not Threatened by Google's Android

Google's dominance of the web will not translate to the mobile phone market, a senior executive at Symbian has said.

John Forsyth, vice president of strategy at Symbian, the platform that powers many of the world's phones, said Google lacked experience.

Google has formed an alliance with 33 firms to develop an open platform for mobile phones, called Android.

Meanwhile, the head of Nokia in the UK said the firm was in discussions with Google about using the platform.

Simon Ainslie, Nokia UK's managing director, said: "We are always open to discussion and debate on that. We were not ready to make any commitment to it or discuss it at the time."

"We are having ongoing discussions with Google."

Mr Ainslie said the time was not right to make any announcement as to "how we can work with them".

He also said that Nokia was very happy with its partnership with Symbian.

Mr Forsyth said Google had to be aware that making a "mobile OS is a very specialised form of rocket science.

"It's not search rocket science."

He said the alliance was yet another attempt to launch a Linux-based operating system to drive mobile phones.

"About every three months this year there has been a mobile Linux initiative of some sort launched.

"It's a bit like the common cold. It keeps coming round and then we go back to business. We don't participate in these full stop. We make our own platform and we are focused on driving that into the mobile phone market at large ever more aggressively."

'Deeply unsexy'

Mr Forsyth said there was nothing to indicate that Google's dominance of the web would make it successful as a mobile phone platform provider.

"Search and a mobile phone platform are completely different things.

"It's costly, arduous and at times a deeply unsexy job of supporting customers day by day in launching phones. That's something there's very little experience of in Google's environment.

"if you are a serious phone maker and you are asked to bet your handsets on somebody, you would want to bet on someone with a track record of delivery and support."

Mr Forsyth also questioned whether developers would flock to the system.

"It's very clear what developers want - volume and a stable platform that doesn't keep breaking. You have to have a lot of zeroes in your sales figures before a developer gets out of bed.

"They are talking about having a phone by the end of next year. It's not one that is going to ignite developers."

Line Forming at the UK Launch of the Iphone

The UK iQueues have officially begun to form ahead of the Apple iPhone going on sale in the UK on Friday 9th November at 6.02pm at Apple stores, O2 stores and The Carphone Warehouse.

The people in line so far outside Apple's Regent Street store, are braving rain, cold and the mean London streets to be first to get an O2 iPhone.

Graham Gilbert, a 22-year-old computing student has bagged the honor of being the first in the UK iPhone queue and turned up at 8.30am on Thursday morning for the privilege.

He told Pocket-lint that he intends to stay overnight and has got his sleeping bag to hand, with friends bringing him and his queue-buddy, TUAW blogger Nik Fletcher, various supplies.

"I've been looking forward to the iPhone since it was announced in January", Graham told Pocket-lint, and revealed that he had bunked a University lecture in order to be there.

Graham, who intends to buy an O2 contract for his iPhone, says he doesn't plan to unlock it, as it would just get "broken" again with the next iPhone update.

The BBC weather service says there will be lows of 3 degrees celcius overnight in London, so it could be a cold wait for Graham.

When the phone made its worldwide retail debut in the States, which was also on a Friday at 6pm, hoards of die-hard Apple fans (and it has to be said, some oddballs) formed queues from the Tuesday onwards.

Bonjour, todays pictures are from MobiFrance who just shot me an email with their very own Nokia N82 pictures. Just looking at that huge Xenon flash gives me the chills.

Quick recap of the Nokia N82: 5 Megapixel Car Zeiss optics, WiFi, HSDPA 2100 MHz, quadband GSM, 3.5 mm headphone jack (Sony Ericsson will never learn this) and S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1.

Something tells me this device will be shipping sooner rather than later. Usually when leaks like this happen it can only mean one thing: lots of models are floating around in peoples hands. Expect to hear something next week at the Nokia Bloggers event at Nokia HQ in Finland.

Sad Christmas for W960i Fans in the UK

Bad news for those in the UK who are eagerly awaiting the release this month of the SE W960i... they will have to wait a little bit longer than the rest of the world.

This is according to Pocketlint, who had a chat with the folks at Sony Ericsson UK:

"There will be no W960 until January", says Marketing Head of Sony Ericsson UK, David Hilton

"With such a crowded market for new phones before Christmas, we have decide to wait until the new year to launch the handset", says a spokesman at the Sony Ericsson launch event in central London.

Nokia N82 Live Pictures

If you’ve been waiting anxiously for the Nokia N82 to hit the ground running with its long, 5 megapixel, Carl-Zeiss legs, you’ll have to keep waiting a bit longer. But, we have some more pics of the N95’s candybar-sibling for you to drool over in the meantime (or not, we prefer the N95). Again, this thing’s packing the same serious guts (aside from the addition of the Xenon flash) as it’s sliding Nokia stablemate - integrated GPS, 3G (HSDPA), WiFi, 5 megapixel camera with Carl-Zeiss optics and Xenon flash, Bluetooth, access to Nokia’s Music Store, and automatic screen rotation (a la the “rotateme” accelerometer tweak on the N95). That’s right! Nokia’s given the N82 out-of-the-box screen rotation.

Nokia’s apparently gone official with its accelerometer support on the Nokia N82, so we’re wondering what their plans are for the Nokia N95’s accelerometer. Will Nokia release an update to leverage the built-in accelerometer to enable an official auto-rotate feature? Well, if they don’t, at least we have "rotate me".

Head on over to Symbian-Freak to check out the full hands-on experience. Interesting footnote - they excuse the photo quality because all pics were taken with an N95. What?

The W960 Walkman® phone will start to ship from November 2007, Sony Ericsson announced today. The W960, a potent combination of slim UMTS and Wi-Fi™ enabled phone with high performance media player, will be available in selected markets across the globe in time for the Christmas season.

The W960 was unveiled in June 2007 and marks a next generation of Walkman® phones. With room for up to 8,000 songs* and finger-touch navigation around playlists on the large touch screen, the days of taking an MP3 player and a phone with you are definitely over. The 2.6” display also serves as an excellent viewfinder for a 3.2 megapixel camera and as a widescreen for watching video in TV quality.

“The W960 has been generating a lot of consumer excitement since the day it was announced,” says Ben Padley, Head of Music Product Group at Sony Ericsson. “As the next instalment in our hugely popular Walkman® phone series, we are confident that this music mix of 3G phone, Walkman® player and quality camera will prove to be a hit, and a great complement to the rest of the range.”

Sony Ericsson’s Music Desk Stand MDS-65 will also hit stores at around the same time. The perfect musical complement to the W960 and many other Sony Ericsson phones, the MDS-65 lets you charge the phone while experiencing high-fidelity sound on its four full-range neodymium-magnet speakers. And when you’re on the move, the MDS-65 runs on batteries so you can use it anywhere you like – from barbecue to beach. With its sleek, futuristic silver finish, it can’t help but draw admiring glances.

The Sony Ericsson W960 Walkman® phone is UMTS 2100-GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 and will be available in Vinyl Black from November 2007.

The Music Desk Stand MDS-65 will also be available from November 2007.

When not in use, the W380 Walkman® phone looks discreet and laid-back from the outside. But as soon as you receive a call or play music, it comes alive. Choose different light effects for different callers, and see your music ‘dance’ when the phone’s lights match the beat of your favourite song.

Accessorise it
To enjoy your music discreetly when you’re in public, choose a great headset to go with it. Pick from the Stereo Portable Headset HPM-83 or the Stereo Bluetooth™ Headset HBH-DS200 if you want to stream music wirelessly from your phone.

Iphone Workshop, Hints at Iphone Launch in Canada?

Over the past month there have been several reports and even one press statement from a beer manufacturer that was quickly retracted, all hinting that the iPhone was on its way to Canada. Now, after most of these have been put to rest, the biggest tip-off of all comes directly from Apple itself.

Apple’s legendary stance on secrecy can be annoying, frustrating and many other things, but it is especially ironic when the company itself slips up and lets information slip through its fingers. It was no secret that the iPhone was coming to Canada sooner or later, but the exact timeframe has never been discussed, being exclusively the subject of rumor mongering.
Appletell’s Michael Mistretta stumbled upon a very interesting entry on the workshop list for Apple’s Eaton Center store in Canada, namely the ‘iPhone Workshop: Getting Started’ which will be taking place between 2 and 3 PM on the 10th of November.

The workshop date listed is very soon, which makes sense as workshops need to be announced a few days ahead. Furthermore, Apple will be launching the iPhone in the UK Friday, November 9th, just one day before the listed date of the workshop. Apple isn’t likely to pull a surprise iPhone Canada announcement, just days before the long scheduled and announced UK launch, so the only thing that would make sense is for them to launch it at the same time. Then again, Apple has previously split such announcements apart, even if only by a day.

Of course, this could all be just a typo, or some sort of publicity move, but it is highly unlikely as Apple has enough iPhone press as it is and ‘iPhone Workshop: Getting Started’ is a bit of a stretch for a typo. In any case, unlike other such instances, one only has until Friday to wait and see if this is true or not.

Nokia Unveils Haptikos Tactile Touchscreen

It’s taken them 10 years but Nokia boffins have finally perfected a ‘touch feedback’ touchscreen. Don’t be fooled by simple vibrational imitations folks, this is the real McCoy – you press a key on the screen, and it clicks under your finger with exactly the same sort of fingertip feedback as if you’d pressed a conventional keyboard key. Roope Takala, Senior Program Manager at Nokia’s research labs gave me a demo of the technology in Finland the other day on a hacked N770 Internet tablet.

“The basic technology is not that difficult,” he explained, “We inserted two small piezo sensor pads under the screen and engineered in a 0.1mm movement in the screen itself. What’s taken the time has been fine tuning the movement and response to mimic exactly the sensation of pressing a real key.”

The problem in perfecting the tech – codenamed Haptikos, meaning ‘to touch’ – lies in how our fingers experience a key press. We actually feel two movements, in and out, and these movements and the associated audio have to be perfectly attuned to the speed and responsiveness of a real keyboard. In use, the touch feedback on the demo device was near on perfect. Each press of a key returned a clunky click and tactile snap on the touchscreen, which made typing feel incredibly responsive and very usable on the smooth screen surface. In fact it was hard to remember that you were using a touchscreen keyboard.

“Funnily enough, although you think you’re typing faster than normal because of the feedback, in actual fact you’re not,” said Takala, “There’s just some sort of mental satisfaction that comes from typing with a tactile response.”

The new Haptikos technology will apparently be shipped with the upcoming Nokia S60 Touch phone that has been shown off at recent demos, and the team is busy working on the next challenge, which is to provide exact tactile replicas for scrolling and draw/paint programs. The problem is that while we expect and need ultra fast responses for keyboard use, navigation and things like drag scrolling require a different, slower response map, which is another hurdle for the engineers to overcome.

“What’s nice is that people who are new to handheld devices don’t even notice this technology at first,” says Takala with a smile. “But they really miss it if you take it away from them once they’ve experienced it. It’s kind of addictive.”

Nokia Open to Google Software Alliance

Nokia would not rule out taking part in Google Inc's new mobile software alliance, which is seen rivaling Nokia's own plans, a spokesman for the world's top mobile phone maker said on Tuesday.

"It's not ruled out at all. If we would see this as beneficial we would think about taking part in it," said Kari Tuutti, spokesman for Nokia's multimedia unit.

"We should never close any doors."

Web search leader Google said on Monday it would enter the mobile phone market, saying its planned mobile phone software may boost Web use on handsets but without threatening entrenched players.

Analysts, however, said Google could have the means to disrupt the status quo in the wireless software industry, which is dominated by a handful of large phone makers and regional service providers that often tightly control customer choices.

HTC Admits Working On a Google Phone

Taiwanese mobile phone maker High Tech Computer (HTC) is already working on a Google phone, and will start selling it in the second half of next year, an executive said Tuesday.

The company was rumored early on to be making a handset for Google as was South Korean handset giant Samsung Electronics. But with the Monday launch of Google's mobile phone software, called Android, HTC was able to lift the veil of secrecy around its plans.

Android, an open source software platform that includes an OS, is designed to take advantage of Internet services for mobility, exactly the target for HTC's new handset, said John Wang, chief marketing officer at HTC. He declined to give specific details about the hardware makeup of the phone.

The strength of Google's new platform is its flexibility, since it will allow companies to innovate with their own software and services, said Wang.

The Google phone that HTC is working on could end up causing it some headaches. HTC is known as the world's largest maker of handsets that use Microsoft Windows Mobile software, a rival to Android. Should Android's popularity take off, HTC could cannibalize some of its own sales as well as those of partner Microsoft.

That's certainly not HTC's intention.

"Our commitment to the Windows Mobile platform is unwavering," Wang said, adding that many mobile phone OSes currently compete in the market.

Android could become a potent new rival to Windows Mobile and other handset OSs. At the launch ceremony, Google announced that over 30 companies had climbed on board its Open Handset Alliance, including HTC, Qualcomm, and Motorola.

S60 Touch UI Info

S60.com has updated their information regarding the new Touch UI that was announced at the Symbian Smartphone Show recently in London. The pages now give insight into the new abilities and opportunities that the touch UI offers, as well as a flash demo of different screens and transmissions.

There are apparently three key principles that have shaped the design of the new UI:

1. User Enjoyment - the UI needs to be fun without ever compromising its usability.

2. Smart Simplicity - usability tests have been conducted around the world with different languages and cultures.

3. Expandable Experiences - giving users the ability to decide not only what features they want on their handset, but also how the UI looks and feels.

As part of this, they've also released the Haze visual theme, which is available here for installation on all S60v3 devices.

Google Releases "Android" Mobile Phone OS

Hoping to do for the mobile environment what it has done for information searches, travel directions, and blind dates, Google announced on Monday the release of a new mobile operating system known as "Android," as well as the formation of a new coalition, the Open Handset Alliance, to implement the new OS and develop applications for it.

According to Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence, a consulting and research firm, the new mobile OS is based on Linux and contains a Web browser, video player, instant-messaging application, and several other features.

Google's Android OS is the outgrowth of a mobile software project started three years ago by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Andy Rubin. His company, Android, was acquired by Google in August 2005 for an undisclosed amount in a move that was widely seen as the opening play of Google's wireless plans.

Free and Open Source

"The new OS is totally open source and completely free," Sterling said. "It will totally radicalize the cost of developing applications for mobile phones. The Google mobile OS is dramatically simpler, and much easier to adapt to different hardware equipment and protocols."

He added that the software developer's kit for Android will be available as early as next week, and that the Android OS could appear on consumer products as early as mid-2008.

Although several Google applications will ship with copies of Android, they can be stripped out by carriers, equipment manufacturers, or even the end user. "With Android," Sterling pointed out, "there is no single user experience; companies can use the OS to create individual and even branded experiences for their customers."

As impressive as the development of a mobile OS is, Google's real accomplishment is the creation of such a broad mobile coalition. More than 30 different companies have signed up as members of the Open Handset Alliance, with representatives from equipment manufacturers, carriers, software developers, and commercialization partners.

There are some notable mobile players missing from the OHA so far. The largest equipment manufacturer, Nokia, is still on the sidelines, and two companies deeply involved in the mobile space, Microsoft and Yahoo, have adopted a "wait-and-see" approach.

Microsoft has particular reason to be concerned about the release of Android, Sterling pointed out, because it is a direct competitor to the company's Windows Mobile. Sterling said that he expects that companies such as Nokia and even Microsoft ultimately will join the alliance, particularly if consumers react favorably to Android.

"The promise of Android," he suggested, "is that it will give consumers control over their mobile experience that they don't currently have." The new OS, for instance, will make it easier for users to share applications with their friends, Sterling explained, much like they do now on Facebook.

O2 UK iPhone Hands-On Video

O2 UK IPhone Unboxing Video

UK Iphone Installed with Firmware 1.1.2

The UK iPhone is, externally, identical to the US version. The biggest modification is on the inside and is something that will have nerdgeeks sprinting to online forums in a message-posting furore. We can reveal that the UK iPhone is, in fact, installed with firmware version 1.1.2. Oh, how we wanted to post picture proof last week but would have run the risk of Steve Jobs personally removing our knackers. As well as more keyboard character sets, the updated firmware will have addressed security issues and minor bugs: Great for news overall stability, but it is likely to cause yet another uproar in Apple's loyal fanbase, as Apple is sure to have closed up the security loopholes (such as the TIFF exploit) which allowed people to hack the iPhone to run their own software.

The UK iPhone works just the same way as one bought from the states. However, having a solid week to play around on the o2 network meant we could road-test the experiences of iBlighty come 9 November. And impressed we were. Early reservations about the iPhone's lack of 3G were dampened with how well EDGE copes with Safari page loading (around 10 secs), Google map finding, email downloading and other net-based apps (weather and stocks). Glen did mention, however, that because we were testing in Beta, we might not reach warp speeds until the ninth. So, a chunky double thumbs up, although we'd like to see a greater selection of UK weather locations and an improved pop-up blocker - a roguish couple escaped the net.

Web-surfing on the iPhone is simply the best example of internet browsing on a handheld device. Ever. Zooming is smooth, pages look great thanks to its super-sharp screen and the virtual keyboard is quick to learn - we were double finger pecking within a few days. And now that IMAP has been added for Gmail, we were living the mobile office dream.

A nice piece of insider info: If you've signed up to an o2 contract before 18 Sep 2007, you can break it and jump onto an iPhone plan without incurring any leaving or contract-moving costs. You'll be able to keep your old handset too.

Sony Ericsson to Announce Three New Phones?

Sony Ericsson will announce three new handsets and a range of Bluetooth accessories. There will be two new Walkman phones and one phone in the emotional design category. Check out the details.

W890i: A 3G Walkman phone with accelerometer, it is an upgrade of the W880i. This will have Play Now 4.0 as well as a new version of the Walkman player. There will be a 3.2 megapixel camera onboard.

W380i: An upgrade of the W300i, it will have a new feature called gesture control. I’m not very sure of what it will do, but it will control the Walkman player by some gestures. It is not a 3G phone.

K660i:
The USP of this 3G phone will be its web browsing capabilities. It will allow users to browse the web in the landscape mode and will come with a pointer cursor. To me, it smells like Opera!

New Sony Ericsson Phone (W750i ?) to Be Launched with Stereo Speakers, HSDPA

We get a heads-up on the new Sony Ericsson handset

We’ve uncovered a few sneaky facts about the imminent new handset from Sony Ericsson – for which there is no name, yet.

Slipping a couple of bucks to a back-street shoe-cleaner, we learned the new mobile will support HSDPA as standard and pack stereo speakers.

There were also rumblings of an improved storage capacity though we can’t confirm the size. By the sounds of it, Sony Ericsson is sticking to its mastery of the Walkman brand on a mobile as the key feature of the new handset. That can only be a good thing.

We’ll bring you more information next week when the phone is officially announced.

Cellphones as Incentive at New York Schools

In New York City public schools, cellphones are considered contraband. But free cellphone airtime could be a reward for high-performing students if the city adopts the newest idea from the city Education Department's chief equality officer.

That official, Roland Fryer, a Harvard economist who is leading the city's program to pay cash to some students who do well on standardized tests, told an undergraduate economics class at Harvard last month that his next proposal would include a plan to give cellphones to students, and reward those who do well with free minutes - an idea that is at odds with one of the city's most contentious school policies, the ban on students having cellphones in school.

Last month, the city embraced a plan by a private foundation to reward students who pass Advanced Placement tests with thousands of dollars.

Under the newest proposal, the cellphones would be donated at virtually no cost to the city and students would be unable to make calls during school hours, Fryer said, according to people who attended the lecture. The free phones would have a fixed number of minutes of airtime. Students who excel would be rewarded with additional minutes, Fryer told the class, the people said.

If officials approve the idea, the first batch of free phones, flip-style models donated by Motorola, would be delivered to several hundred students this month, Fryer told the class. He said the program, if approved, would eventually attempt to include one million students in city schools.

Fryer also told the class that celebrities, including the hip-hop artist Jay-Z, might be asked to record ring tones.

Chuck Kaiser, a spokesman for Motorola, said in an e-mail message that the company was "aware of the concept," but that it would be premature to comment on it because "the project is under consideration and no commitments have yet been made."

Verizon Announces BlackBerry Pearl 8130

Verizon Wireless has officially announced the first American-bound CDMA BlackBerry Pearl. The Verizon BlackBerry 8130 is no secret horse, having been rumored and revealed time and time again. Even so, it’s nice to see our CDMA-loving friends get a bit of SureType love. The Verizon Pearl sports Ev-DO, GPS (which happens to be locked to Verizon’s proprietary VZ Navigator), a new browser, 3.5 mm headphone jack, and an external microSD slot that provides support for cards up to 8GB in capacity. Not too shabby. The handset will be available online and in physical stores on November 8th for a somewhat shockingly high price of $249.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. On the flip side, Verizon is bringing its BlackBerry BIS plans in line with Sprint’s recent price drop, offering unlimited data for $29.99 a month. Not too bad.

Telstra Launches Phone for Rural Australia

Telstra has launched a new "super receptive" mobile phone which it recommends for handheld use in rural areas across Australia. The handset is being supplied by China's ZTE.

The Telstra 165 'Country Phone' is one of two new WCDMA (Next G) handsets being added to the growing 'Blue Tick' range of rural specific phones. The other new Blue Tick handset is the Nokia N95, which will be in stores from mid-November.

"The Country Phone is the first Next G handset with a pullout antenna and it's built to meet the demands of Australia's tough outdoor conditions. The handset's bigger design incorporates a large, easy to use key pad to accommodate even the biggest of fingers and the phone is protected in rubber casing, is dust proof, shock and liquid resistant," Telstra Country Wide Group Managing Director, Mr Geoff Booth, said.

Telstra Product Management Group Managing Director, Ms Holly Kramer, said while the Country Phone had a focus on utility, the Nokia N95 had all the style and sophistication synonymous with one of the world's leading handset brands.

"Incorporating advanced multimedia functionality and elegant design, the Nokia N95 is the first Nokia handset to achieve Telstra's Blue Tick for handheld use in rural areas," Ms Kramer said.

Both new handsets offer easy 1-click content and applications including access to BigPond TV, 33 channels on Mobile FOXTEL, Sensis search services plus an array of free BigPond content such as the latest news and weather reports.

Nokai Music Store Launches Without Warner Music

Notice anything missing from the Nokia Music Store launched yesterday? How about Madonna? According to the Wall Street Journal, Warner Music Group -- yeah, that guy -- is withholding their goods due to concerns with copyright abuse at Nokia. No, not with Nokia's Music Store but with their seemingly unrelated MOSH (MObile SHaring) file-sharing service. The other three majors -- Universal, Sony BMG, and EMI -- are all playing nice, however. A Nokia spokesman confirmed the absence stating, "we are hopeful that Warner will be part of Nokia Music Store in the future." Who knew that Madonna could be used like a big stick?

Nokia Music Store UK Now Online

The Nokia Music Store (UK) is now live at music.nokia.co.uk. The PC site requires Internet Explorer (partly due to the Nokia Music Bar which is used to download tracks) and is open to allcomers. The mobile version (same address) can currently only be accessed on a Nokia N95 8GB or a Nokia N81, using the dedicated on-device client.

Apple Iphone - Time Magazine's Invention of the Year

Stop. I mean, don't stop reading this, but stop thinking what you're about to think. Or, O.K., I'll think it for you:

The thing is hard to type on. It's too slow. It's too big. It doesn't have instant messaging. It's too expensive. (Or, no, wait, it's too cheap!) It doesn't support my work e-mail. It's locked to AT&T. Steve Jobs secretly hates puppies. And—all together now—we're sick of hearing about it! Yes, there's been a lot of hype written about the iPhone, and a lot of guff too. So much so that it seems weird to add more, after Danny Fanboy and Bobby McBlogger have had their day. But when that day is over, Apple's iPhone is still the best thing invented this year. Why? Five reasons:

1. The iPhone is pretty
Most high-tech companies don't take design seriously. They treat it as an afterthought. Window-dressing. But one of Jobs' basic insights about technology is that good design is actually as important as good technology. All the cool features in the world won't do you any good unless you can figure out how to use said features, and feel smart and attractive while doing it.

An example: look at what happens when you put the iPhone into "airplane" mode (i.e., no cell service, WiFi, etc.). A tiny little orange airplane zooms into the menu bar! Cute, you might say. But cute little touches like that are part of what makes the iPhone usable in a world of useless gadgets. It speaks your language. In the world of technology, surface really is depth.

2. It's touchy-feely
apple didn't invent the touchscreen. Apple didn't even reinvent it (Apple probably acquired its much hyped multitouch technology when it snapped up a company called Fingerworks in 2005). But Apple knew what to do with it. Apple's engineers used the touchscreen to innovate past the graphical user interface (which Apple helped pioneer with the Macintosh in the 1980s) to create a whole new kind of interface, a tactile one that gives users the illusion of actually physically manipulating data with their hands—flipping through album covers, clicking links, stretching and shrinking photographs with their fingers.

This is, as engineers say, nontrivial. It's part of a new way of relating to computers. Look at the success of the Nintendo Wii. Look at Microsoft's new Surface Computing division. Look at how Apple has propagated its touchscreen interface to the iPod line with the iPod Touch. Can it be long before we get an iMac Touch? A TouchBook? Touching is the new seeing.

3. It will make other phones better
jobs didn't write the code inside the iPhone. These days he doesn't dirty his fingers with 1's and 0's, if he ever really did. But he did negotiate the deal with AT&T to carry the iPhone. That's important: one reason so many cell phones are lame is that cell-phone-service providers hobble developers with lame rules about what they can and can't do. AT&T gave Apple unprecedented freedom to build the iPhone to its own specifications. Now other phone makers are jealous. They're demanding the same freedoms. That means better, more innovative phones for all.

4. It's not a phone, it's a platform
when apple made the iphone, it didn't throw together some cheap-o bare-bones firmware. It took OS X, its full-featured desktop operating system, and somehow squished it down to fit inside the iPhone's elegant glass-and-stainless-steel case. That makes the iPhone more than just a gadget. It's a genuine handheld, walk-around computer, the first device that really deserves the name. One of the big trends of 2007 was the idea that computing doesn't belong just in cyberspace, it needs to happen here, in the real world, where actual stuff happens. The iPhone gets applications like Google Maps out onto the street, where we really need them.

And this is just the beginning. Platforms are for building on. Last month, after a lot of throat-clearing, Apple decided to open up the iPhone, so that you—meaning people other than Apple employees—will be able to develop software for it too. Ever notice all that black blank space on the iPhone's desktop? It's about to fill up with lots of tiny, pretty, useful icons.

5. It is but the ghost of iPhones yet to come
the iphone has sold enough units—more than 1.4 million at press time—that it'll be around for a while, and with all that room to develop and its infinitely updatable, all-software interface, the iPhone is built to evolve. Look at the iPod of six years ago. That monochrome interface! That clunky touchwheel! It looks like something a caveman whittled from a piece of flint using another piece of flint. Now imagine something that's going to make the iPhone look that primitive. You'll have one in a few years. It'll be very cool. And it'll be even cheaper.

Chinese E28 Smartphone, the Google Phone?

On the heels of the latest Google and Verizon announcement, we've just confirmed a tip from an industry insider that China's e28 is going to be a Google Gphone software and handset manufacturer (this is from one source only - not two as we usually receive). We have not been able to confirm whether the Chinese smart phone manufacturer will have the exclusive Gphone software and handset rights. E28 is a leading provider of mobile Linux convergence technology and will fit the Google mantra of keeping everything open.

Choosing e28 as the Gphone manufacturer and Linux software provider is an ingenious move that will certainly trump the popularity of the iPhone. Imagine a phone that makes calls using a low cost VOIP system on cellular networks and WIFI while seamlessly integrating data across diverse technology platforms. Add to that an open platform that will allow any programmer to develop add-on applications (see Facebook) and you have the makings of a revolution in Mobile technology.

Nokia N82 Spotted in the Wild in Buenos Aires

A Nokia executive was spotted in Buenos Aires with a brand new Nokia N82, to be launched this friday. The announcement day was confirmed along with its features, already leaked on the web.

The version spotted has a silver case, different from the black phone that was leaked a few days ago. It reminds an N73, but thicker, with the same 2,4 inch screen, front VGA camera for video calls and an aluminum keyboard. On the back, the N82 has a 5 megapixel camera equal to the one in Nokia N95, but with an exclusive xenon flash.

“The N82 is a lot faster taking pictures than the N95. It has no difference in experience from a dedicated digital camera” said the executive that recieved the phone on the day before. The quote suggests that Nokia has solved a main issue with the N95 - its latency between photos.

The new phone from Nokia, which will be launched on a London event on November 2nd, also has a built-in GPS, Wi-Fi and UMTS/HSPDA support. Other N95 specs are present, such as the 3,5 mm audio plug, microSD slot and USB 2.0 interface.

Iphone Coming to Australia thru Telstra?

Telstra has emerged as the favorite operator to offer the hotly awaited iPhone.

Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo this week confirmed talks had already begun with Apple, which plans to launch the handset in Australia next year.

Mr Trujillo said Telstra would be interested in the device if it delivered an enhanced experience for their customers.

"The answer is simple: yes we'd be interested and we're exploring that option," he said.

"We've had conversations with Apple and a lot of others and what's interesting now is that everybody's now responding to the Apple iPhone.

"Almost every supplier has big plans in the next six to 12 months with their version of an iPhone in response."

The Next G network operates at the rarer 850Mhz frequency and requires specialized handsets.
Mr Trujillo predicted Apple would produce a compatible iPhone.

"The company they introduced the iPhone with in the US is Cingular and obviously we have a very good relationship with Cingular (now called AT&T)," he said.

Mr Trujillo said deals struck between Apple and AT&T in the US, O2 in the UK, T Mobile in Germany and Orange in France - all believed to involve revenue sharing - would have no bearing on a possible deal between Apple and Telstra.

Apple Australia offered no comment.

10,000 Iphones Sold in One Day, Predicts Carphone Warehouse

Europe's biggest independent cell phone retailer, Carphone Warehouse, could sell up to 10,000 Apple iPhones when it goes on sale next week, a Carphone executive said on Thursday.

The touch-screen smartphone, which combines Apple's popular iPod music player, a camera and Web browser, will be sold through Spanish-owned operator O2 UK, Carphone Warehouse and Apple retail and online stores from November 9.

Apple has not given any forecasts for sales since announcing the launch in Britain but Darren Gardner, head of wireless UK at Carphone Warehouse, said with around 800 stores across the country, Carphone could hope to sell up to 10,000 in the first day.

The phone will go on sale at 6 p.m. local time next Friday and the Carphone stores are set to stay open for four hours to meet consumer demand.

"We will hope to represent a big share of what is sold," he told reporters on Thursday.

Verizon Voyager Leaked Data Sheet

The Christmas season looks set to be a hot one, with Apple’s iPhone coming under attack from the Samsung F700 and Verizon’s Voyager. Both touchscreen cellphones, one a slider and the other a clamshell; we showed you preview footage of the Voyager from the carrier’s booth at CTIA but until now we’ve only had relatively scant details of the phone’s capabilities. Well that’s all changed, after a leaked data sheet has flaunted the Voyager’s innards across the internet.

So what are the highlights? Well, there are details of the different camera functionality, as well as tidbits about the media player (and that it will apparently work with 8GB MicroSDHC cards ), and that the card slot at least will show up as a USB mass storage device, though it’s unclear as to whether the phone’s memory will be so easily accessed. There’s also a list of upcoming accessories, though none out of the ordinary. It’s still an interesting handset, though the talk of a less-than-fulsome browser (i.e. not of the same calibre as that of the iPhone) is mildly concerning.
